Vail is a lead-on town. Dogs are welcome in the village and in every town park except Ford Park, but they stay on a lead on every trail and bike path, and the only two places to let one run are Bighorn Park in East Vail and Stephens Park in West Vail. Dogs don't ride the gondola up Vail Mountain and they aren't allowed on the free town bus, so this is a place you walk. Our list here is short and we'd rather say so: five hotels, four of them in Vail Village and one in Keystone in Summit County. Nothing is listed yet in Beaver Creek itself, Lionshead, Avon, Edwards, Breckenridge or Steamboat Springs. Aspen has its own page.
With only five to choose from, what separates them is how much each one tells you before you arrive, and most say very little about where a dog can go beyond the room. Gravity Haus Vail is the one clear answer, with dog-ready rooms and dogs welcome at the outdoor fire pit. The Sebastian puts the most in the room: a bed, bowls, a toy, local biscuits and a custom bandana, plus a concierge who will point you to trails, parks and patios. Kindred Resort in Keystone sets out a bed and bowls and keeps treats at the front desk. Tivoli Lodge has its own chocolate labrador, Racer, and a small number of dog-friendly rooms you arrange with the lodge before arrival. Sitzmark Vail takes one dog per room and publishes nothing else. None of the five publishes a rule for the restaurant, the bar or breakfast, so ask by name when you book.
Fees are charged four different ways. Sitzmark is USD 55 a night plus tax. The Sebastian is USD 75 per pet per night. Tivoli Lodge is USD 100 per pet per stay, non-refundable. Kindred charges a one-time USD 150 for stays of up to four nights and USD 250 beyond that, with no nightly fee, which makes it the best value on a longer trip. Gravity Haus takes a pet fee at booking and waives it for members, but doesn't publish the amount. No hotel on this list publishes a weight limit, so with a big dog there is no named pick, only a phone call. Tivoli, Gravity Haus and Kindred each take two dogs.
Two things to watch. Kindred Resort is in Keystone, not Vail, so book it for Summit County and not for a walk to Vail Village. And at Gravity Haus only the dog-ready hotel rooms take dogs. The Vail condos sold under the same name don't, and a dog can't be left alone in the room there.

Before you go
What happens when you get there
- Leads and off-leash parks
- Dogs on a lead are welcome in Vail and in all town parks except Ford Park, where they aren't allowed. A lead is required on every trail in and around town, including those entering the Eagles Nest Wilderness, on all bike paths, within 100 feet of athletic fields and at Donovan Park at all times. The two off-leash areas are Bighorn Park in East Vail, with grassy fields and a small pond, and Stephens Park in West Vail along Gore Creek, which isn't fenced and needs voice control.
- Gondolas
- Vail's visitor guidance is that dogs can't ride the gondola up Vail Mountain, but if you hike up you can both ride down for free. Confirm that with the resort before you plan a day around it. Beaver Creek's gondola and lift rules for dogs are not confirmed, so check the resort's own page. In Breckenridge the gondola takes dogs for free, though dogs are prohibited in the Cucumber Gulch Wildlife Preserve beneath it.
- Buses
- Dogs aren't allowed on Vail's free town bus, so plan to walk or drive. The rules for the Summit County and Eagle County regional buses are not confirmed. Check with each operator before relying on one.
- Moose
- This is the real wildlife risk. Colorado Parks and Wildlife says moose react to a dog as they would to a wolf, and advises keeping dogs on a lead and under control in the backcountry or leaving them at home. If a moose charges, run and put something large such as a boulder, a car or a tree between you. The White River National Forest adds that repeated disturbance by dogs in calving season lowers calf survival.
- Winter driving
- When Colorado's traction law is active, a passenger vehicle needs AWD or 4WD with mud and snow, winter or all-weather rated tyres at 3/16 inch tread, or chains or an approved traction device. Fines are USD 100 plus a USD 33 surcharge, or USD 500 plus USD 157 if you block the road. It can be applied on any state highway when conditions warrant, so check COtrip before you set off.
- Altitude, sun and snow
- Take it easy for the first days while your dog adjusts to the elevation, and expect strong sun and very dry air. In winter an insulating layer and boots or a paw balm help with snow packing into paws. Pick up after your dog everywhere. Waste carries bacteria into Gore Creek.
- Fees
- USD 55 a night plus tax at Sitzmark Vail. USD 75 per pet per night at The Sebastian. USD 100 per pet per stay at Tivoli Lodge. A one-time USD 150 at Kindred Resort, or USD 250 for stays over four nights. Gravity Haus Vail charges a fee at booking that it doesn't publish and waives it for members, so ask for the figure.
- Patios
- Vail has a good run of dog-friendly patios, including Bart & Yeti's, Garfinkel's, La Tour, Tavern on the Square, Yeti's Grind, Alpenrose, Blue Moose Pizza, Bully Ranch, Up the Creek, Vendetta's and Westside Cafe. Vail Brewing Co. takes dogs on a lead on its patio. The Pet Boutique of Vail sells coats and collars if you arrive under-dressed.
- Best walks
- In Vail, the North Trail and Trappers Run, both on a lead and packed down quickly in winter, then Booth Creek, Gore Lake, Lost Lake, Pitkin Lake and the Upper Piney River trail for longer days. The Vail Nature Center has seven acres to wander and the Vail Nordic Center has six miles of snowshoe terrain. For a run off the lead it's Bighorn Park in East Vail or Stephens Park in West Vail. In Summit County, Breckenridge's Carter Park at the south end of High Street is a free off-leash park of almost an acre with a separate small-dog enclosure, and the Southside, Moonstone, Sunbeam, Sawmill, Trail Forest and Peaks trails are the named dog walks. Dogs are on a lead within Breckenridge town limits and everywhere on the Rec Path.
- When to go
- Summer for the hiking, when Booth Creek, Pitkin Lake and the other high trails are the point of the trip. Go slowly at first because of the altitude, carry water for the dry air and keep the lead on around moose, above all in calving season. Winter works if your dog likes snow: the North Trail packs down quickly and the Vail Nordic Center has snowshoe terrain, but bring a coat and boots or paw balm, and check COtrip for the traction law before the drive.

Questions we get asked
Dogs in Vail and Beaver Creek
Is Vail dog friendly?+
Yes, on a lead. Dogs are welcome in Vail and in every town park except Ford Park, there are two off-leash parks and a long list of patios that take dogs. The limits are that dogs don't ride the gondola up the mountain or the free town bus, and our hotel list is short at five.
How much do Vail hotels charge for dogs?+
USD 55 a night plus tax at Sitzmark Vail, USD 75 per pet per night at The Sebastian and USD 100 per pet per stay at Tivoli Lodge. Kindred Resort in Keystone charges a one-time USD 150 for up to four nights or USD 250 for longer. Gravity Haus Vail doesn't publish its fee and waives it for members.
Where should I stay in Vail with a big dog?+
None of the five hotels on our list publishes a weight limit, which means none of them confirms a big dog in writing either. Ask before you book. Tivoli Lodge, Gravity Haus Vail and Kindred Resort each take two dogs, and Sitzmark Vail takes one.
Are there dog-friendly hotels in Beaver Creek?+
We don't have one listed in Beaver Creek yet, and nothing in Avon or Edwards either. Four of our five hotels are in Vail Village and the fifth is in Keystone. We'll add Beaver Creek hotels when their terms are confirmed with the hotel.
Can dogs ride the Vail gondola?+
Not up. Vail's visitor guidance is that dogs can't ride the gondola up Vail Mountain, but you can hike up and both ride down for free. Check with the resort before you go, and check Beaver Creek's own page for its lifts, as that rule is not confirmed.
Can I take my dog on the bus in Vail?+
No. Dogs aren't allowed on Vail's free town bus, so plan on walking or driving. Rules on the regional buses in Eagle and Summit counties are not confirmed.
Where can my dog go off the lead in Vail?+
Two places. Bighorn Park in East Vail has grassy fields and a small pond, and Stephens Park in West Vail runs along Gore Creek, isn't fenced and needs voice control. Everywhere else in town, and on every trail and bike path, it's a lead.
Can I leave my dog alone in a Vail hotel room?+
Not at Gravity Haus Vail, where dogs can't be left unattended. The Sebastian, Tivoli Lodge, Sitzmark and Kindred Resort don't publish a rule, so ask. At Kindred, housekeeping won't service the room while a dog is inside.
Are moose a danger to dogs around Vail?+
They can be. Colorado Parks and Wildlife says moose treat a dog as they would a wolf, so keep your dog on a lead and under control in the backcountry. If one charges, run and get a boulder, a car or a tree between you.
