Where can my dog actually go?

The Valais takes dogs, but it doesn't make a fuss about it. Most of the luxury hotels here accept them, and very few say much more than that. Seventeen hotels on our list take dogs, from Verbier and car-free Saas-Fee to the lake plateau at Crans-Montana, Champéry and Leukerbad, with Villars just over the canton line in Vaud. Saas-Fee is the stand-out resort for walking with a dog, with no cars and a 60 km winter walking network, and Crans-Montana has the most hotels on the list and flat lake walks across the plateau. Sion has no hotel on our list.

What separates them is how much they'll tell you. The Walliserhof Grand-Hotel in Saas-Fee has its own guide for guests with dogs: a blanket and water bowl in the room, a treat on arrival, dogs at Del Ponte and the Stübli if you mention them when you book the table, and clear instructions for when the dog is alone in the room. The Capra, also in Saas-Fee, puts a basket or blanket and two bowls in the room and keeps designated places for dogs in Brasserie 1809. La Cordée des Alpes in Verbier will book a dog-sitter through its partners. Most of the rest, including Six Senses Crans-Montana, Guarda Golf, Crans Ambassador and Villars Palace, take dogs on request without publishing a fee or saying where the dog can go, so agree the details before you arrive.

Published fees are CHF 30 a night at the Walliserhof and CHF 30 a day at La Cordée des Alpes, CHF 40 at Chalet RoyAlp in Villars, CHF 45 at The Capra and CHF 50 a night at W Verbier. The others confirm the figure when you book. Nobody here publishes a no-limit policy for a big dog. W Verbier caps at 18 kg and Therme 51° in Leukerbad takes small dogs only, so for a bigger dog start with the Walliserhof, The Capra or Chalet RoyAlp and give them the breed and weight up front.

Two refusals worth knowing because they sound like they'd say yes. Chetzeron above Crans-Montana allows dogs in its restaurant at lunchtime but not in the hotel or its vehicles. Hôtel Viu in Villars welcomes pets only on the restaurant terrace. Aïda in Montana is adults-only, and LeCrans keeps three of its rooms pet-free.

    The clearest yes in Verbier itself, at CHF 30 per dog a day, and the team will book a dog-sitter through partners if you want a day on the slopes. Close to the Médran gondola for Les Ruinettes and the Bisse du Levron. Ask about the restaurant and spa before you arrive.

What happens when you get there

Trains and PostBus
The SBB Day Pass Dogs covers a full day on trains, PostBus routes, boats and most city trams and buses, in either class. It's CHF 25 until 12 December 2026 and CHF 27 from 13 December. Dogs under 30 cm at the withers travel free in a box or basket, on the trains and on PostBus.
Lifts
In Saas-Fee dogs over 30 cm at the withers pay a quarter of the adult fare, or CHF 50 for a dog season card and CHF 100 for a year. Glacier 3000 near Villars carries dogs free on its cable cars and chairlift, on a lead in the restaurants and on the Glacier Walk, and not on the pistes. No dogs on the Diablerets toboggan run. Téléverbier and the Crans-Montana lifts don't publish a dog rule, so ask at the ticket desk.
Bisses
The flat paths along the old irrigation channels are the best summer dog walks in the Valais, with water running from early June to late October for drinking and cooling off. Some are cut into cliffs, including parts of the Bisse du Ro, the Grand Bisse de Lens and the Bisse du Torrent-Neuf above Sion, so pick your route for a nervous dog.
Restaurants
Mountain restaurants tend to say yes. Le Mouton Noir and La Marlenaz above Verbier both welcome dogs. Some village restaurants don't, Black Tap in Verbier among them. In hotels the gourmet room is usually a no and the brasserie or stübli usually a yes.

CHF 30 at the Walliserhof and La Cordée des Alpes, CHF 40 at Chalet RoyAlp, CHF 45 at The Capra, CHF 50 at W Verbier. Most other hotels confirm the fee on booking. W Verbier caps at 18 kg and Therme 51° takes small dogs only. Nobody publishes a no-limit rule.
Winter walking
Saas-Fee's 60 km of winter paths ask for dogs on a lead, on marked routes, with avalanche closures respected. At Crans-Montana the Chemin golf Ballesteros is a signed winter walk from the Cry d'Er gondola, and the Loutze winter trail at Ovronnaz is marked as dog-friendly.
Seasonal closures
Many lifts and some hotels close in spring and late autumn. Saas-Fee's lifts were shut from 19 April to 13 June in 2026. Check dates before booking a shoulder-season trip.
Vets
Vet Valais, Rue des Écoles 2, Chippis, below Crans-Montana near Sierre, takes emergencies 24 hours a day on +41 79 613 06 01. On the Verbier and Saas-Fee side, ask your hotel for the nearest out-of-hours vet when you arrive.
Best walks
In Saas-Fee, the 7.5 km bisse trail from Postplatz and the 60 km winter path network. Above Verbier, the Bisse du Levron family walk from Les Ruinettes through pastures to the Chute du Bisse. On the Crans-Montana plateau, the 8.8 km Promenade du 100ème linking Étang du Grenon and Ycoor park, plus Étang Long and Moubra lake, and the 10.7 km Bisse du Tsittoret loop from Montana. The Bisse de Clavau runs 14 km through vineyards from Icogne down to Sion. Above Leukerbad, the two-hour loop round the Daubensee at the Gemmi Pass. In Champéry, the forest path along the Vièze and the 12 km Roc Coupé and Bonavau circuit from the station. From Villars, the train up to Col de Bretaye for open walking.
When to go
Early June to late October is bisse season, when the channels run with water and the high paths are open. December to April is for snow, with Saas-Fee's winter walking network and the lifts running. Avoid the gaps in spring and late autumn, when lifts and some hotels close, and check each hotel's dates before you plan around them.

Is Verbier dog friendly?+

Yes, quietly. La Cordée des Alpes takes dogs at CHF 30 a day and will book a dog-sitter, W Verbier takes dogs up to 18 kg at CHF 50 a night, and Chalet d'Adrien takes them with a supplement confirmed on booking. Mountain restaurants such as Le Mouton Noir and La Marlenaz welcome dogs, though some village restaurants don't.

Is the Valais dog friendly?+

Yes. Seventeen hotels on our list take dogs, trains and PostBus carry them on a CHF 25 day pass, and the bisse paths make for flat summer walking with water on the way. The catch is that most luxury hotels here don't publish their dog terms, so agree fees and access before you arrive.

Which hotels in Saas-Fee allow dogs?+

The Walliserhof Grand-Hotel and The Capra are both on our list and both publish proper dog terms. The Walliserhof allows dogs at Del Ponte and the Stübli, and The Capra has designated places for dogs in Brasserie 1809. Saas-Fee is car-free, which makes it the easiest resort in the region to walk with a dog.

Can dogs walk the bisses?+

They're the best summer walks in the Valais for a dog, flat and with water running from early June to late October. No dog rules are published for them, and some routes, like the Bisse du Ro and the Grand Bisse de Lens, have exposed cliff sections. The Bisse du Levron family walk above Verbier and the Saas-Fee bisse trail are easier.
