Where can my dog actually go?

Washington is a better dog city outdoors than in. The lawns and paths of the National Mall, the Rock Creek Park trail, the C&O Canal towpath through Georgetown and 20 official city dog parks give you proper walking from almost any hotel door. Indoors is another story. Every Smithsonian museum and the Zoo are closed to dogs other than service animals, and most memorials exclude pets too. Twenty-eight hotels on our list take dogs, from the Four Seasons in Georgetown to a pair in Old Town Alexandria across the river.

What separates them is where the dog can be once you've checked in, and in DC the answer is mostly your room. Several hotels state outright that dogs aren't in their indoor restaurants or bars: the Four Seasons, Rosewood, The Jefferson, Melrose Georgetown and Riggs, which puts it down to DC requirements. The Dupont Circle Hotel is the one confirmed place on this list to eat with your dog, on the outdoor patio of Doyle. Kimpton George has dogs at its nightly hosted wine reception. The Fairmont serves puptails for dogs in its Courtyard Bar. Just as important is whether the dog can stay behind while you see a museum. The Four Seasons, the Fairmont, The Dupont Circle Hotel and Capitol Hill Hotel all say no to a dog left alone in the room.

Fees and weight limits swing wildly between hotels a few blocks apart. Dogs stay free at the Four Seasons, Kimpton George, Eaton DC, The Royal Sonesta Dupont Circle, the Fairmont and The Darcy. At the other end, InterContinental The Willard charges USD 200 a stay and the Waldorf Astoria is listed at USD 250 per pet, a figure to confirm with the hotel when booking. The Hay-Adams stops at 25 lbs (about 11.3 kg) and The Willard at 40 lbs (about 18.1 kg). For a big dog, the Four Seasons, Kimpton George, Eaton DC and The Royal Sonesta Dupont Circle publish no weight limit and no fee, which makes the choice easy.

Watch the names. Melrose Georgetown Hotel is on Pennsylvania Avenue in Foggy Bottom and the Fairmont Washington, D.C., Georgetown is on M Street in the West End, each a walk from Georgetown and not in it. Archer Hotel Old Town Alexandria and Morrison House are in Virginia, not the District. And not every big name takes dogs. JW Marriott Washington, DC, The Mayflower Hotel and Gaylord National at National Harbor all state pets not allowed, Hamilton Hotel does not allow pets, and Phoenix Park Hotel on Capitol Hill accepts service dogs only.

    The Dupont Circle Hotel

The one confirmed place on this list to eat with your dog, on the outdoor patio of Doyle, with dogs also welcome in the public areas on a lead and in-room dining if you'd sooner stay in. One dog, USD 100 a stay, and it can't be left alone in the room. The limit is given as 50 lbs, so confirm the weight with the hotel if your dog is near it.

USD 100 · max 50 lbs (about 22.7 kg) kg

  2. 02
    Kimpton George Hotel

Dogs join you at the nightly hosted wine reception, which is as sociable as a DC hotel gets for a dog. Before you go

What happens when you get there

Museums and memorials
The Smithsonian's visitor rules prohibit dogs and other animals other than service animals, and emotional support, therapy and comfort dogs don't count. That covers every Smithsonian museum and the Zoo. The National Park Service says pets are excluded from most memorials, so the lawns and paths between them are where people walk dogs. Plan indoor sights around a sitter or a hotel that lets the dog stay in the room.
Leaving your dog in the room
Not allowed at the Four Seasons, the Fairmont, The Dupont Circle Hotel or Capitol Hill Hotel. The Jefferson needs you in the room, with the dog leashed or crated, when housekeeping comes. Most other hotels here publish no rule, so ask by name before you book museum tickets. The Four Seasons concierge can arrange dog walking, and The Royal Sonesta Dupont Circle and Melrose keep details of local sitters.
Eating with your dog
Treat indoor dining as a no. The Four Seasons, Rosewood, The Jefferson, Melrose and Riggs all keep dogs out of their restaurants and bars. The Dupont Circle Hotel welcomes dogs on its outdoor patio and offers in-room dining with your dog. For patios elsewhere in the city, ask before you sit down. We haven't confirmed a citywide patio rule.
Weight limits
25 lbs (about 11.3 kg) at The Hay-Adams and 40 lbs (about 18.1 kg) at The Willard. 50 lbs (about 22.7 kg) at Rosewood, Park Hyatt, The Jefferson, The Dupont Circle Hotel, The Ven, Viceroy, Hotel Zena and Archer. 60 lbs at Pendry, 75 lbs at Canopy The Wharf, Melrose and The Darcy, 80 lbs at the Fairmont and Morrison House. No limit at the Four Seasons, Kimpton George, Eaton DC, both Royal Sonesta hotels, Lyle and Riggs. Hotel Washington says breed and weight restrictions apply without naming them.
Fees
Free at the Four Seasons, Kimpton George, Eaton DC, The Royal Sonesta Dupont Circle, the Fairmont and The Darcy. USD 50 at The Jefferson and Canopy The Wharf, and USD 50 per pet at Viceroy and Hotel Zena. USD 75 at Melrose, Morrison House and The Royal Sonesta Capitol Hill. USD 100 at Lyle, Riggs, The Ven, The Dupont Circle Hotel and, as a minimum, Rosewood. USD 150 at Pendry, Archer, The Morrow and, per pet, Capitol Hill Hotel. Hotel Washington charges USD 100 for cleaning plus USD 35 a day.
Fees to confirm
Park Hyatt and The Hay-Adams don't publish a fee, and The Hay-Adams asks you to contact the hotel before completing a reservation. Confirm the figures at the Waldorf Astoria (USD 250 per pet per stay) and the Conrad (USD 75 per room per stay) with the hotel when booking. At The Willard, ask whether the USD 200 is the whole charge or whether a deposit sits on top. Ask The Morrow whether its USD 150 is per pet and Canopy The Wharf whether its USD 50 is per stay or per night.
Getting there
Amtrak takes dogs and cats only in a carrier, with a 20 lb limit for pet and carrier combined, on trips up to seven hours on most routes, one pet per customer, in Coach and Acela Business Class. In practice that rules out anything bigger than a small dog arriving by train at Union Station. Reagan National has pet relief areas before security beside both Metrorail station entrances and after security in Terminal 1 near Gates A1 to A9 and in Terminal 2 near Gates E46 to E59. Dulles has four, two outside the terminal and two in the concourses.
Metro and buses
We haven't been able to confirm the current pet rule for Metrorail or Metrobus, so we're not publishing one. Check with WMATA before you rely on it. The safer plan is to choose a hotel you can walk from, which is easy in Georgetown, Dupont Circle, Downtown and Capitol Hill.
Best walks
The C&O Canal towpath from Georgetown, which starts behind the Four Seasons and outside Rosewood, on a lead no longer than six feet and with bagged waste carried out because the park is trash free. The Rock Creek Park trail, about five minutes from the West End hotels and three from The Royal Sonesta Dupont Circle over the P Street bridge, also six feet of lead at most, with DC fines of up to USD 300 for a dog off the lead outside a designated dog park. Georgetown Waterfront Park on the Potomac. The lawns and paths of the National Mall between the memorials, with Lafayette Square, the Ellipse and Pershing Park for the Downtown hotels. The Wharf promenade along the Washington Channel. For off-lead time, the city dog parks: Francis at 25th and M Streets NW, 26th and I in Foggy Bottom, S Street at 17th and S in Dupont, Shaw at 11th Street and Rhode Island Avenue NW, Swampoodle at 3rd and L Streets NE in NoMa, Lansburgh near the Wharf and Kingsman on Capitol Hill. In Alexandria, King Street runs down to the Potomac waterfront and Founders Park, where the Mount Vernon Trail follows the river.
When to go
None of these hotels publishes seasonal dog terms, so the fees and limits above hold all year. What changes is how much of the city you can use. With the museums closed to dogs and indoor dining off the table, a DC trip with a dog is an outdoor trip, built on the Mall, the towpath, Rock Creek and patios, so pick dates when you'd both be happy outside for most of the day. We haven't confirmed summer heat guidance for the city, so check the forecast before you commit to long midday walks, and carry water on the C&O Canal towpath, which the park itself advises.

Questions we get asked

Dogs in Washington DC

Is Washington DC dog friendly?+

Outdoors, yes. Twenty-eight hotels on our list take dogs, six of them with no fee, and the National Mall lawns, Rock Creek Park, the C&O Canal towpath and 20 official dog parks give you plenty of walking. Indoors, much less so. The Smithsonian museums and the Zoo don't admit dogs other than service animals, most memorials exclude pets, and hotels keep dogs out of indoor restaurants and bars.

Which Washington DC hotels have no pet fee?+

The Four Seasons, Kimpton George, Eaton DC, The Royal Sonesta Washington DC Dupont Circle, the Fairmont and The Darcy. The first four also publish no weight limit. The Fairmont takes dogs up to 80 lbs (about 36.3 kg) and The Darcy takes dogs under 75 lbs (about 34 kg).

How much do Washington DC hotels charge for dogs?+

From nothing to USD 250. USD 50 a stay at The Jefferson, USD 50 per pet at Viceroy and Hotel Zena, USD 75 at Melrose, Morrison House and The Royal Sonesta Capitol Hill, USD 100 at Lyle, Riggs, The Ven and The Dupont Circle Hotel, and USD 150 at Pendry, Archer, The Morrow and Capitol Hill Hotel. The Willard charges USD 200 a stay and the Waldorf Astoria is listed at USD 250 per pet, which is worth confirming with the hotel when booking.

Where should I stay in Washington DC with a big dog?+

The Four Seasons in Georgetown, Kimpton George on Capitol Hill, Eaton DC downtown and The Royal Sonesta Dupont Circle all take any size at no charge. The Royal Sonesta Capitol Hill, Lyle and Riggs also publish no weight limit, for USD 75 to USD 100 a stay. Avoid The Hay-Adams, which stops at 25 lbs, and The Willard, which stops at 40 lbs.

Can I take my dog into the Smithsonian museums?+

No. The Smithsonian's visitor rules prohibit dogs and other animals other than service animals, and emotional support, therapy and comfort dogs are not counted as service dogs. That applies to every Smithsonian museum and the Zoo, so you need a sitter or a hotel that lets the dog stay in the room.

Can I leave my dog alone in a DC hotel room?+

Not at the Four Seasons, the Fairmont, The Dupont Circle Hotel or Capitol Hill Hotel, which all require the dog to be with you. Most of the others don't publish a rule either way, so ask before you book if you're planning museum days. The Four Seasons concierge can arrange dog walking, and The Royal Sonesta Dupont Circle lists nearby dog sitters.

Which Washington DC hotels let dogs into the restaurant or bar?+

None of them indoors, as far as their published rules go. The Dupont Circle Hotel welcomes dogs on the outdoor patio of Doyle, Kimpton George has dogs at its nightly hosted wine reception, and the Fairmont serves puptails for dogs in its Courtyard Bar. Ask the Fairmont whether that means inside the bar or the courtyard outside. The Four Seasons, Rosewood, The Jefferson, Melrose and Riggs are a clear no in restaurants and bars.

Which Washington DC hotels take two dogs?+

Kimpton George sets no limit on numbers and Eaton DC takes more than one pet, both free. The two Royal Sonesta hotels, Viceroy, Hotel Zena and Morrison House take two. Park Hyatt takes two at 50 lbs each and 75 lbs (about 34 kg) combined. The Four Seasons, Rosewood, The Willard, The Dupont Circle Hotel, The Ven and Archer are one dog per room.

Can I take my dog to Washington DC on Amtrak?+

Only a small one. Amtrak takes dogs in a carrier with a 20 lb limit for pet and carrier combined, a maximum carrier size of 19 x 14 x 10.5 inches, one pet per customer, on trips up to seven hours on most routes. Pets travel in Coach and Acela Business Class only, and the fee varies by route and shows when you book.

Are dogs allowed on the National Mall?+

On the lawns and paths between the memorials, yes, and that is where people walk their dogs. The National Park Service says pets are excluded from most memorials, so expect to stay outside them. Keep your dog on a lead and check the posted signs for the current rules.
