Where can my dog actually go?

Yorkshire is easy with a dog once you're out of the city. Most of the Dales and Moors inns take dogs, the village pubs let them into the bar, and the walking starts at the door, from Malham Cove to the Cinder Track above Whitby. It gets harder the smarter you go. Grantley Hall, Rudding Park and The Grand in York all refuse dogs, and York itself keeps dogs off the city walls and out of the Minster. Eighteen hotels on our list take dogs, and most of them are in the countryside.

The question that separates them is where your dog eats. The Yorkshire norm is dogs in the bar, the lounge and on the terrace, and not in the main dining room. Beck Hall in Malham breaks it completely, with dogs at breakfast, lunch and dinner in the bar and the restaurant, and by the fire in the Snug. The Devonshire Arms at Bolton Abbey keeps a few dog tables in both the Garden Room and The Brasserie that you reserve ahead. Swinton Park seats dogs at breakfast at the high tables in Samuel's and at dinner in the Terrace Bar. The Wensleydale Heifer serves the full menu in the snug and bar, and the dog gets a sausage at breakfast. Asquith Hall near Scarborough does all three meals in the bar and bistro. At The Lister Arms, Aysgarth Falls and Stone House it's the bar, and the dining room is a no.

Fees start at nothing at Middlethorpe Hall in York and GBP 15 a night at Beck Hall, which covers up to three dogs. Dean Court, The Stables in Whitby and The Feathers in Helmsley charge GBP 15 a night for up to two. The Lister Arms charges GBP 20 for the whole stay and The Wensleydale Heifer GBP 30 per stay. The Devonshire Arms and The Fell are GBP 20 per dog per night, Saltmoore GBP 25 and Swinton Park GBP 35. No hotel here publishes a weight limit in kilos. The Feathers takes small to medium dogs only, Middlethorpe says one large dog or two small, and Beck Hall publishes no size limit and takes three, which makes it the pick for a big dog or a pair.

Two traps. Middlethorpe Hall is dog-friendly, but only in the Cottage Suites and the Garden Suite, and dogs don't go into the main house at all, so you won't be eating together. And the Feversham Arms in Helmsley is closed for renovation until early 2028, so it isn't bookable whatever you read elsewhere.

What happens when you get there

Eating with your dog
Assume the bar, not the dining room, and book the dog's table when you book the room. Beck Hall takes dogs at every meal. The Devonshire Arms, Asquith Hall and the two Inn Collection hotels, Dean Court and The Stables, have a limited number of dog tables or areas. The Timble Inn allows dogs in the bar only at lunchtime, Wednesday to Saturday.
Getting there
Most people drive. LNER runs King's Cross to York in about two hours, and National Rail rules allow up to two dogs free, on a lead or in a carrier and never on the seats. From Ireland, dogs can't fly into the UK in the cabin, so take the ferry to Holyhead or Liverpool and drive about three hours, and check the current Ireland to Great Britain pet rules before you sail.
York city
Dogs aren't allowed on the city walls, except assistance dogs, and no animals go into York Minster apart from service animals. The walks are the Ouse riverside paths, Rowntree Park and the Knavesmire, which runs right past Middlethorpe Hall.
Beaches
From 1 May to 30 September dogs are banned on five named stretches of resort sand: part of Filey, a section each of Scarborough North Bay and South Bay, part of Whitby West Beach and the Sandsend stretch by Bank Bottom car park. The fine is GBP 100. The rest of that coast, including Robin Hood's Bay, isn't in the order, and all five stretches open to dogs from October to April.
Livestock and moorland
On open access land dogs must be on a lead from 1 March to 31 July, and near livestock at any time. Most Dales and Moors walks cross sheep grazing. At Bolton Abbey dogs are on a lead in Strid Wood and aren't allowed on Barden Moor or Barden Fell.
North York Moors Railway
Pickering to Whitby via Goathland and Grosmont. Well-behaved dogs travel on standard services for GBP 3 per dog per day, on a short lead and off the seats.
Leaving the dog
Swinton Park lets you leave the dog in the room if you tell reception and use the door hanger. Stone House allows it while you're elsewhere in the hotel. The Feathers says never while you're off the premises, and the Devonshire Arms and The Fell ask that dogs aren't left unattended, so plan dinner around that.
Vets
No 24-hour vet was found in these areas. Vets Now Middlesbrough (01642 965044) covers nights and weekends for the Moors and coast, and Vets Now Bradford (01274 398905) for the Dales and Harrogate. In the upper Dales, Wensleydale Vets (01969 422201) and Yoredale Vets (01969 623024) are local.
Best walks
Malham Cove from Beck Hall or The Lister Arms, looping back by Gordale Scar and Janet's Foss. The riverside path along the Wharfe from the Devonshire Arms to Bolton Priory, and the Dales Way between Burnsall and Grassington. Aysgarth Falls on woodland paths from Aysgarth, Hardraw Force and Cotter Force near Hawes. The Cleveland Way from Helmsley to Rievaulx Abbey, about three miles. The Cinder Track between Scarborough, Robin Hood's Bay and Whitby. In town, the West Park Stray and the Valley Gardens in Harrogate and the Knavesmire and the Ouse paths in York.
When to go
May, June and September are the easy months for the Dales and Moors, with long evenings and pub terraces open. From March to July the dog stays on a lead on the moors, and spring lambing means sheep in most fields. For the coast, October to April opens every beach to dogs, while summer closes five resort stretches. Winter ice can shut York's walls for the day, and in dry spells the moorland fire risk is high, so no barbecues.

Is Yorkshire dog friendly?+

Yes, especially in the Dales and on the Moors, where most inns take dogs and the pubs let them into the bar. Eighteen hotels on our list take dogs. The exceptions are at the top end and in York: Grantley Hall, Rudding Park and The Grand don't take dogs, and dogs aren't allowed on York's city walls or in the Minster.

Which Yorkshire hotels let dogs in the restaurant?+

Beck Hall in Malham takes dogs at breakfast, lunch and dinner in the restaurant. The Devonshire Arms has bookable dog tables in the Garden Room and The Brasserie, and Dean Court and The Stables have designated dog areas in the restaurant. Everywhere else it's the bar, snug or terrace, so book the table when you book the room.

Can dogs have breakfast with me in a Yorkshire hotel?+

At Beck Hall, yes. Swinton Park seats dogs at the high tables in Samuel's, The Wensleydale Heifer serves breakfast in the snug and bar with a sausage for the dog, and Asquith Hall does breakfast in the bar and bistro. Most other hotels don't publish a breakfast rule, so ask.

How much do Yorkshire hotels charge for dogs?+

Nothing at Middlethorpe Hall. GBP 15 a night at Beck Hall for up to three dogs, and at Dean Court, The Stables and The Feathers for up to two. GBP 20 per stay at The Lister Arms and GBP 30 per stay at The Wensleydale Heifer. GBP 20 per dog per night at the Devonshire Arms and The Fell, GBP 25 at Saltmoore and GBP 35 at Swinton Park.

Where should I stay in Yorkshire with a big dog?+

Beck Hall publishes no weight limit and takes up to three dogs in every room. Middlethorpe Hall in York says one large dog or two small ones in its cottage suites. Avoid The Feathers in Helmsley, which takes small to medium dogs only. Nobody here publishes a limit in kilos, so give the breed when you book.

Is there a dog-friendly hotel in York city centre?+

Dean Court is across the road from the Minster, takes up to two dogs for GBP 15 a night and has dog areas in the pub and restaurant. Dog rooms are limited, so book the dog in when you reserve. Middlethorpe Hall is out on Bishopthorpe Road by the Knavesmire, with dogs free in the cottage suites but not in the main house.

Are dogs allowed on Whitby and Scarborough beaches?+

Can I take my dog to the Yorkshire Dales for a weekend without a car?+

You can get to York by train with up to two dogs free under National Rail rules, and the North York Moors Railway takes dogs for GBP 3 a day. For the Dales inns, Malham, Bolton Abbey and Wensleydale, a car is the realistic option.
