AS Boutique Hotel

Flight into Ljubljana's tiny airport (passport control happens at the jet bridge, they check the passenger list against your name, very small operation, around 15 flights a day in off-season). Twenty-five minute taxi into town. The cabbie spotted the destination and laughed: looks like you picked this hotel for the dog, super dog friendly. Drop-off is at the top of the pedestrian zone, about 100 metres above the hotel, so you walk down. The doors aren't obvious, across from McDonald's, easy to miss, keep your eyes peeled. Inside, it's pure luxury: wood-panelled walls, brass hardware, a big resolute check-in desk that feels manor rather than hotel lobby. Staff knew exactly who we were because we'd shared our arrival time. Daisy was handed treats at check-in. First time ever, anywhere in the world. I was handed a glass of sparkling wine. We'd booked last-minute on the only room left, but they upgraded us to a terrace room.

Carpeted hallways, room numbers laid into the tile on the floor, old-school detail. Inside the room: chrome ceiling moulding, decorative furnishings with gold and brass accents, super king bed, beautifully done bathroom (tinted black glass with a privacy curtain). Daisy's bed was already set up with bowls and a welcome box of treats. Cookies for me. The minibar was completely free, which I've only ever experienced on cruise ship suites. The terrace looked out onto the old castle on the hill, lit up at night.

Some street noise on Friday evening, you're in the middle of everything, which is the trade-off for the central pedestrian-zone location. The hotel itself was zero stress, but a couple of city-wide friction points worth flagging: the funicular up to the castle requires a muzzle for dogs (strict, no carrier alternative accepted), and the bus to Lake Bled is at the driver's discretion even with a muzzle. Daisy has a soft mesh muzzle from Temu I'd brought as backup, which got us onto the bus, but the return trip was a chaotic shit-show of overflowing buses. Take an Uber back from Bled, budget about EUR 56 each way. The hotel's Michelin-tier in-house restaurant Jazz by Anna Rose was running a set menu for a city-wide food week during our stay, which underwhelmed us, go for breakfast there, not the food-week dinner.

Pedestrian-zone location means you're walking everywhere from the front door. River walk is right there, with hot chocolate stops, gelato, and benches along the water. The walk up to the castle is a stepped trail, there's a callisthenics outdoor gym in the forest on the way up where Daisy and I did pull-ups for fun. Park exercise nearby. The pedestrian zone itself is full of dog-friendly cafes and Slovenian dog owners who genuinely engage. Daisy made friends with a tiny Yorkie named Hulk in the square (1.5 kg, treats were swapped). The vibe everywhere is that locals aren't overwhelmed by tourism, which makes the whole walking experience feel different from Venice or Milan.
