“An 89-room family four star at Kalamaki with an aqua park, water slides, two bar lounges and a sunbathing terrace, about five minutes' walk from the beach and 2.8 kilometres from Laganas. It's the practical family option in this corner of the island and it takes dogs, which most of its neighbours don't. The water-park format means noise and crowds in August, so it suits a settled dog rather than a nervous one.

Why it's in the collection

The lanes through the olives up towards Pantokratoras give a cool early walk away from the resort strip, and for a swim the west coast rocks at Porto Limnionas are worth the drive.
