NIKO Seaside Resort MGallery, Crete

An adults only seafront resort in Agios Nikolaos where the staff knew Daisy's name before we told them.

Daisy's Verdict
Would Daisy stay again? Yes, without hesitation.
9 out of 10, and Daisy Approved without hesitation. The missing point is for breakfast without Daisy and a spa that's really a treatment room with a sauna attached. Everything else was as close to perfect as this trip got, and at around €300 a night it was the cheapest stay of our Crete trip and arguably the best.

Overall recommendation

Stay three nights, take a plunge pool room if it's in budget, mention your dog at booking so the paperwork and bowls are ready, and skip the crowded beaches up the coast: the hotel's own beach is calmer, cleaner and fifty steps from your room.

Best suited for

Couples, honeymooners, and friend trips with a small dog who want a walkable town, a calm private beach, and zero screaming children. Not for families, and spa devotees should know there is no thermal area.

One thing to know before booking

There is a signed Pet Acceptance Agreement at check-in: one well-mannered dog up to 8kg per room, no pet fee, leashed or carried in common areas. Dogs are not allowed at breakfast, inside or on the terrace. Pack beach shoes too; the beach entry is rocky and non-negotiable.

Favourite moment

The champagne with Daisy's name on the handwritten card, and Natasha from guest relations quietly arranging half our best memories in town, calling ahead so every restaurant knew Daisy was coming.

The real stay

Daisy, on the ground.

The hotel

The adults only hotel that made Daisy famous.

NIKO Seaside Resort is a 5-star adults only MGallery on the seafront of Agios Nikolaos, East Crete. Before the handbrake was even on, Manoli appeared at the car door with the biggest smile in town, and the welcome never wore off. Check-in happened over a lemony Cretan welcome drink in the lounge, with a cup of water for Daisy, and upstairs a bottle of champagne was waiting with a handwritten note addressed to Pam and Daisy. The upgrade to a sixth floor sea view room came with its own plunge pool on the balcony and Mirabello Bay stretching out to the mountains.

The win of the entire stay is the hotel-only beach across the road: around twenty sets of big comfortable loungers, drinks service to the sand, water so clear you can see straight to the bottom, and, because the hotel is adults only, total calm. Daisy swam with her floaty and spent her days under her own umbrella. Dogs sit out breakfast and the pool decks, but they join dinner at Mira with the sunset over the infinity pool, and guest relations call ahead to restaurants in town so your dog gets the VIP treatment at every table.

What we noticed
Arrival

Manoli appeared at the car door before the handbrake was on, unloaded every bag and Daisy's stroller, and walked us in like family. Check-in happened in the lounge over a lemony Cretan welcome drink, with a welcome cup of water for Daisy, and Natasha from guest relations said hello to Daisy before the humans, which is the correct order of operations.

The room

Upgraded to a sixth floor sea view room with a private plunge pool on the balcony. Champagne with a handwritten note addressed to Pam and Daisy, bowls set out for her, and glass balcony panels so she could watch the pool action below. No dog bed provided. One quirk: the shower is open in the room behind glass, so ask about the layout when booking.

Daisy's Note

Deluxe Retreat with sea view and plunge pool; the glass-fronted balcony means your dog gets the view too. Ask about the open-shower layout when booking.

Worth knowing

Dogs are not allowed at breakfast, inside or on the terrace, so Daisy sat that one out in the room. Both pool decks are also off limits, though the tight rows of sunbeds are not dog territory anyway. The beach entry is rocky, so the dog swims from your arms and you need beach shoes.

Walkability

The most walkable base we have had in Crete. The hotel-only beach is fifty steps across the road, the harbour front is a flat stroll, and Daisy was welcome at every restaurant in town, helped by guest relations calling ahead to say she was coming.

Daisy's Note

By the time we left, guests were greeting Daisy by name in the corridors, and most of them knew her name before they'd asked for mine.
