“The Algonquin is a 181-room 1902 hotel on West 44th Street, best known for the Round Table literary circle and its resident lobby cat, always named Hamlet if male and Matilda if female, a tradition running since the 1930s. Rooms are compact by nature of the old building but the location is a short walk from Bryant Park and Times Square. It suits travellers who want a central Theater District base with real history. Dog owners should note the resident cat lives in the lobby.
