Where can my dog actually go?

Start with the thing most people get wrong. Arcachon, La Teste-de-Buch (which takes in Pyla and the beaches under the Dune du Pilat) and Lège-Cap-Ferret all keep dogs off their beaches all year, on a lead or not. The one named exception is a stretch of ocean beach at La Salie, south of the dune. So round the bay this is a place of pine forest, promenades and boats for a dog, not sand. The dune itself takes dogs on a lead, and the boat across to Cap Ferret carries them for EUR 2.

Seven hotels on our list take dogs, and what separates them is where the dog is allowed to be. Hôtel Ville d'Hiver lets dogs round the pool (just not in it), has garden and courtyards, and puts you right next to the forest. Down on the Landes coast, 70 Hectares... & l'Océan at Seignosse lets dogs into the restaurant, which is rare here. Le B d'Arcachon sets out a dog bed and a bowl, but its group terms keep animals out of the restaurant. For everywhere else the restaurant, bar and breakfast room aren't published, so ask by name.

Fees are low. Ville d'Hiver and 70 Hectares charge nothing, Le B d'Arcachon EUR 10 a night, Domaine du Ferret EUR 12 a day per dog and Hôtel Point France EUR 20 a day. Villa Colette, the one five-star on the list, charges EUR 50 a night and is for small dogs only. Its own pages give a limit of 10 kg in one place and under 4 kg in another, so confirm before you book. Nobody here publishes a yes for a big dog. Ville d'Hiver and 70 Hectares publish no weight limit and charge nothing, which makes them the first calls with a larger dog.

The top end is thin. Côté Sable in Cap Ferret refuses dogs outright, several of the Cap Ferret guesthouses do too, and the grandest hotels at Pyla publish no dog policy at all, so none of them is on our list. If a beach matters, base yourself at Seignosse, where dogs are only kept off the sand between 11am and 7pm from June to September, and can use it on a lead the rest of the time.

    The only five-star here with written dog rules, on the village square in Cap Ferret a short walk from the Bélisaire jetty. EUR 50 a night for a small dog, on a short lead in the shared spaces and not loose in the gardens. The hotel quotes both 10 kg and 4 kg as the limit, so check which applies.

What happens when you get there

Beaches
Arcachon (Pereire and Le Moulleau included), La Teste-de-Buch with Pyla, and every village in Lège-Cap-Ferret, bay side and ocean side, keep dogs off the beaches with no season given. The one confirmed dog stretch round the bay is at La Salie, on the ocean side south of the Dune du Pilat. We couldn't confirm any other dog beach in the area, so don't count on one.
Seignosse and Hossegor
Seignosse only bans dogs from its beaches between 11am and 7pm from 1 June to 30 September. Outside those hours and months dogs can go on the sand on a lead, and you pick up after them. At Hossegor the Plage Centrale doesn't allow dogs. The other Hossegor beaches, and Capbreton's, aren't confirmed either way.
Dune du Pilat
Dogs can climb the dune on a lead. Access on foot, by bike or by bus is free and the car park is charged. The sand gets very hot in July and August, so go early or late, and in high fire risk the surrounding forest can be closed by order, so check on the day. The beaches at the foot of the dune fall under the La Teste ban.
The boat to Cap Ferret
The UBA boats across the bay take dogs for EUR 2, on a lead or in a basket, and they can't sit on a seat. Dogs aren't allowed on dining cruises, fishing trips, the 14 July and 15 August fireworks boats, or anything going to the Banc d'Arguin. The captain can refuse an animal.

Free at Hôtel Ville d'Hiver and 70 Hectares. EUR 10 a night at Le B d'Arcachon, EUR 12 a day per dog at Domaine du Ferret, EUR 20 a day at Hôtel Point France, EUR 50 a night at Villa Colette. The Thalazur charges a supplement it doesn't publish. Villa Colette is the only one with a weight limit on paper, and it's a small-dog hotel.
Dogs in the restaurant
70 Hectares lets dogs into the restaurant. Le B d'Arcachon's group terms keep them out. Nobody else publishes a rule, so ask. Terraces take dogs as a matter of course, and most of the oyster shacks round the bay are outdoors anyway.
Getting there
Dogs can't fly into the UK in the cabin, so most UK and Irish owners drive. It's roughly 900 km from Calais to Arcachon, or take Brittany Ferries from Portsmouth or Plymouth to Bilbao or Santander, which leaves about three hours to Hossegor. Bordeaux Saint-Jean to Arcachon is about 50 minutes on the TER, and for Hossegor the nearest stations are Labenne and Saint-Vincent-de-Tyrosse.
Seasonal closures
70 Hectares shuts from 2 November to 25 March, and several Cap Ferret hotels are seasonal too. July and August are hot and very busy, and the road up the Cap Ferret peninsula gets heavy traffic.
Best walks
The pine lanes of the Ville d'Hiver and Parc Mauresque above Arcachon, the Parc Pereire pinewood, and the seafront promenade from the town centre towards Pereire and Le Moulleau. The Dune du Pilat on a lead, early or late in summer, and the ocean beach at La Salie, the one stretch round the bay where dogs are allowed. On the peninsula, the Vélodyssée runs up through the pines, and from Cap Ferret village you can walk to the lighthouse and on to the ocean side. Further south, the forest round Seignosse and Lac d'Hossegor, and the Seignosse beaches outside 11am to 7pm in summer.
When to go
May, June and September are the sweet spot, warm enough for terraces and boats without the crowds. July and August are hot and packed, the dune sand burns paws by midday, the forest can close in high fire risk and the Cap Ferret road clogs. Round the bay the beach ban doesn't lift in winter, so the off season buys you quiet promenades rather than sand. At Seignosse, October to May gives you the beaches all day, but 70 Hectares is shut from November to late March.

Is Arcachon dog friendly?+

For walks and hotels, yes. For beaches, no. Arcachon, Pyla and Cap Ferret keep dogs off the sand all year, apart from one stretch at La Salie. The pinewoods, the promenade, the Dune du Pilat on a lead and the boat to Cap Ferret all work with a dog, and seven hotels on our list take them.

Can dogs go on the beach in Arcachon or Cap Ferret?+

No. Arcachon, La Teste-de-Buch (including Pyla and the beaches under the dune) and Lège-Cap-Ferret ban dogs from their beaches, even on a lead, with no season given. The only confirmed exception is the stretch at La Salie, south of the dune on the ocean side. For a dog beach holiday, look at Seignosse instead.

Is there a dog beach near Arcachon?+

Yes, one. The La Teste-de-Buch order allows dogs on the ocean beach at La Salie, between the southern limit of La Salie Nord and the Wharf. It's the only dog stretch we could confirm around the bay.

Can I take my dog up the Dune du Pilat?+

Yes, on a lead. Go early or late in July and August because the sand gets very hot, and check for fire-risk closures of the surrounding forest in summer. The beaches below the dune don't allow dogs.

Can dogs go on the boat from Arcachon to Cap Ferret?+
