With a dog, the Channel Islands are a trip you plan around the crossing. From the UK there's no pet passport and no paperwork for Jersey or Guernsey, but the dog arrives by ferry, in the car or a pet cabin, or in the hold on Loganair to Jersey. Ten hotels on our list take dogs: four on Jersey, four on Guernsey, one on Sark and one on Alderney. The beach rules are not the same on each island. Jersey asks for a lead on every beach between 10.30am and 6pm from 1 May to 30 September. Guernsey bans dogs from eight named beaches over the same months and leaves the rest alone.
What separates the hotels is where the dog is allowed to be. Stocks Hotel on Sark is the only one of the ten that names a room where your dog can sit with you while you eat: the Bistro and the Cider Press room. Longueville Manor in Jersey has dogs in the lounges and all over the grounds, with treats, bowls and blankets in the room and dog sitting you can book ahead. Five hotels share one group policy (Hand Picked Hotels): Grand Jersey, L'Horizon, St Pierre Park, Fermain Valley and Braye Beach all welcome dogs in the lounges, bars and on the terraces on a lead, and keep them out of the restaurants. The Old Government House in St Peter Port has the biggest dog kit on the islands, with a bed, bowls, toys, a pet room service menu and bookable dog walking, and the tightest access: balcony rooms and suites only, no dogs in the dining, bar or lounge areas, and the dog can't be left alone in the room. Greenhills keeps dogs out of every public area. The Duke publishes nothing on where a dog can go, so ask when you book.
Fees run from GBP 15 per dog per night at Greenhills, through GBP 20 a night at the five group hotels (GBP 10 for a second dog, charged for three nights at most however long you stay), to GBP 30 a day at Longueville Manor and GBP 50 per room per night at the Old Government House, which also pre-authorises a deposit equal to one night's accommodation. Stocks charges a daily fee and a deposit, The Duke takes a refundable deposit, and neither publishes the amount. None of the ten publishes a weight limit, so there's no cap to quote and no pick for a big dog that is safe on paper. Ask before you book. Greenhills takes one dog per room and it has to be over a year old. The five group hotels take two.
Getting there is the part to plan first. DFDS lists Jersey from Poole, Portsmouth and St Malo. Guernsey sailings are booked on the Condor Ferries site, while Guernsey's approved carrier list names Brittany Ferries, so check which name is on your booking. Manche Iles Express, the fast ferry from Normandy, does not take pets. Blue Islands suspended trading in November 2025, Loganair flies dogs to Jersey in the hold only, and Sark with a dog is reached through Guernsey. Routes and operators here have changed recently, so confirm the dog rules with the operator before you book anything.
The list of hotels that say no is long. The Atlantic, The Royal Yacht, The Savoy, St Brelade's Bay Hotel and the three Dolan hotels (Somerville, Golden Sands and Hotel Cristina) take assistance or guide dogs only. On St Brelade's Bay that means L'Horizon takes dogs while St Brelade's Bay Hotel and Golden Sands on the same bay don't. The Moorings in Gorey welcomes dogs in Maddie's and on the terrace but not in the hotel. La Haule Manor in St Aubin and The Blonde Hedgehog on Alderney take dogs in their self-catering only, not in the hotel rooms. The Duke Hotel in St Peter Port is the former Duke of Richmond, and the pet programme older write-ups describe is not on the hotel's site today. What it publishes now is pets with prior notice and a refundable deposit.

Before you go
What happens when you get there
- Paperwork from the UK
- None for either island. Jersey says a pet from the UK needs no pet passport or other documentation, and Guernsey asks for no documentation, vaccination or pre-notification from the UK (excluding Northern Ireland), just a microchip on any dog over 8 weeks old. One narrow exception in Jersey: XL Bully, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Japanese Tosa and Pit Bull Terrier types need an import licence, and those are only issued to resident dogs coming home. That affects owners of those five types and nobody else.
- Ferries to Jersey
- DFDS lists Poole to Jersey (about 4 hours 30), Portsmouth to Jersey (about 9 hours) and St Malo to Jersey (about 1 hour 55). It says pets are welcome on the Poole and Portsmouth routes, with a charge per pet each way and advance booking, and it describes a pet lounge and pet cabins on the Portsmouth ship. The fee, and whether the dog can stay in the car, are not confirmed here, so get both from DFDS before you book. The States of Jersey says that since 1 January 2026 DFDS has limited space for pets travelling with foot passengers between St Malo and Jersey.
- Ferries to Guernsey
- The Guernsey service is booked on the Condor Ferries site, which lists Guernsey from Poole, Portsmouth, Jersey and St Malo. Dogs stay in the car with the windows slightly open and water, or in a pet cabin on Condor Islander and Commodore Clipper (two pets at most), and must be muzzled between the car deck, the cabin and the outside deck. They aren't allowed in the passenger lounges, lobbies or restaurants, and a foot passenger's dog travels in an RSPCA-standard cage in a pet area on the car deck. Published fees are nothing for a pet in a vehicle between the UK and the islands, GBP 11 each way with a foot passenger and GBP 20 each way to or from France in a vehicle only, so confirm them when you book.
- Flying
- Loganair carries pets in the hold only, at GBP 50 one way, with puppies at least 12 weeks old, and lists Jersey as a destination but not Guernsey. At Jersey Airport the dog stays in its travel crate inside the terminal and wears a muzzle through security screening. Blue Islands suspended trading on 14 November 2025 and cancelled all flights. Aurigny's pet rules are not confirmed here, so ask the airline directly before you plan around it.
- Coming from France
- A dog needs a microchip, a rabies vaccination (for Jersey at least 21 days before travel), tapeworm treatment (for Jersey 1 to 5 days before arrival) and a pet passport or Animal Health Certificate, and Guernsey also wants 24 hours' pre-notification. It has to arrive on an approved carrier: Jersey's list names DFDS from St Malo and Condor Ferries from St Malo and Cherbourg into St Helier, and Guernsey's names Brittany Ferries and Channel Seaways into St Peter Port Harbour. Jersey does not let pets in on a private boat or private aircraft. Manche Iles Express, the fast ferry from Granville, Carteret and Diélette, does not take pets at all.
- Jersey beaches
- The rule covers every beach on the island and it is a lead rule, not a ban. From 1 May to 30 September dogs must be on a lead between 10.30am and 6pm. Before 10.30am and after 6pm in summer, and at any time from 1 October to 30 April, dogs can run free. Pick up after your dog, as the fine runs up to GBP 500.
- Guernsey beaches
- Guernsey's rule is a full ban, all day, on eight named beaches only. From 1 May to 30 September dogs are not allowed on Fermain, Petit Bot, L'Erée, the northern end of Vazon (from the drainage pipe near Richmond Kiosk), Cobo, Port Soif, L'Ancresse and Pembroke. Every other Guernsey beach is unaffected by the seasonal ban. All year, dogs aren't allowed on Lihou Island or its causeway or around the bathing pools, and Richmond beach has a voluntary winter ban from 1 October to 30 April to protect wading birds.
- Sark, Herm and Alderney
- With a dog, Sark is reached through Guernsey on Isle of Sark Shipping, about 40 minutes, with the dog on a lead or in a carrier, at the captain's discretion, and you need to be able to carry it on and off. Sark has no cars: a tractor bus runs up Harbour Hill with a woodland footpath alongside. Herm says dogs on leads are welcome on the short crossing from Guernsey, which makes it a good day trip, though no Herm hotel is on our list. Alderney's tourism office says Aurigny takes dogs and that they travel free on the inter-island boat, but neither operator's own rules are confirmed here, so ask both before you book Braye Beach Hotel.
- Best walks
- On Jersey, the flat seafront promenade from St Helier round St Aubin's Bay towards St Aubin, the sand at St Brelade's Bay with Ouaisné and Portelet Common at its eastern end, the Railway Walk from St Aubin to Corbière, the long open sands of St Ouen's Bay and the lanes of St Peter's Valley. On Guernsey, the cliff path from La Vallette in St Peter Port to Fermain Bay and on towards Jerbourg Point, Cambridge Park above the town, and the southern end of Vazon Bay, which stays open to dogs all year. On Sark, the wooded path down Dixcart Valley to Dixcart Bay and the walk across the island to La Coupée, the narrow ridge over to Little Sark. On Alderney, Platte Saline, Clonque Bay and Cat's Bay, which are open to dogs all year. On Herm, Bear's Beach and Moissonniere Beach, the two that take dogs in summer.
- When to go
- October to April is when the beaches open up. From 1 October to 30 April dogs can run free on every Jersey beach at any hour, Guernsey's eight summer-ban beaches are open again and so is every beach on Herm, and Alderney's Braye, Saye, Arch Bay and Corblets are open outside 1 June to 15 September. The honest warnings for the cooler months: Isle of Sark Shipping runs a reduced winter timetable, and Richmond beach in Guernsey has a voluntary winter ban for wading birds. May to September still works on Jersey, where the rule is only a lead between 10.30am and 6pm, and on most of Guernsey's coast, where the ban touches eight named beaches. Two hotels are better outside summer if the beach is the point: the sand in front of Braye Beach Hotel is closed to dogs from 1 June to 15 September, and Fermain beach below Fermain Valley from 1 May to 30 September.

Questions we get asked
Dogs in Channel Islands
Are the Channel Islands dog friendly?+
Yes, with planning. From the UK there's no paperwork for Jersey or Guernsey, ten hotels on our list take dogs, and the summer beach rules on both islands lift from 1 October to 30 April. The work is in getting there, because the dog travels by ferry or in the hold, and in knowing which hotels say no. The Atlantic, The Royal Yacht, The Savoy, St Brelade's Bay Hotel and the three Dolan hotels take assistance or guide dogs only.
Do I need a pet passport to take my dog to Jersey or Guernsey?+
Not from the UK. Jersey says a pet travelling from the UK needs no pet passport or other documentation. Guernsey asks for no documentation, vaccination or pre-notification from the UK (excluding Northern Ireland), only a microchip if the dog is over 8 weeks old. From France or elsewhere in the EU you need a microchip, rabies vaccination, tapeworm treatment and a pet passport or Animal Health Certificate, and the dog must arrive on an approved carrier.
Which ferries take dogs to Jersey and Guernsey?+
DFDS lists Jersey from Poole, Portsmouth and St Malo and says pets are welcome on the Poole and Portsmouth routes, booked in advance with a charge per pet each way. Condor Ferries lists Guernsey from Poole, Portsmouth, Jersey and St Malo, with dogs in the car or in a pet cabin on Condor Islander and Commodore Clipper. Manche Iles Express from Normandy does not take pets. Routes and operators here have changed recently, so confirm with the operator before you book.
How much do Channel Islands hotels charge for dogs?+
GBP 15 per dog per night at Greenhills. GBP 20 a night for the first dog and GBP 10 for a second at Grand Jersey, L'Horizon, St Pierre Park, Fermain Valley and Braye Beach, charged for three nights at most per stay. GBP 30 a day at Longueville Manor and GBP 50 per room per night at the Old Government House, plus a pre-authorised deposit. Stocks and The Duke don't publish their amounts.
Which Channel Islands hotels let dogs into the restaurant, the bar or breakfast?+
Stocks Hotel on Sark is the only one that names dining rooms for dogs, the Bistro and the Cider Press room, though not the Smugglers Bar or the main restaurant. Grand Jersey, L'Horizon, St Pierre Park, Fermain Valley and Braye Beach take dogs in the lounges, bars and on the terraces, and not in the restaurants. The Old Government House keeps dogs out of its dining, bar and lounge areas, and Greenhills out of every public area. None of the ten publishes a yes for dogs at breakfast, so ask by name.
Can dogs go on the beach in Jersey?+
Yes, on every beach, all year. From 1 May to 30 September dogs must be on a lead between 10.30am and 6pm. Outside those hours, and at any time from 1 October to 30 April, dogs can run free. It's a lead rule across all beaches, not a ban.
Which Guernsey beaches ban dogs in summer?+
Eight. From 1 May to 30 September dogs are banned all day from Fermain, Petit Bot, L'Erée, the northern end of Vazon, Cobo, Port Soif, L'Ancresse and Pembroke. Every other Guernsey beach is unaffected by the seasonal ban. All year, dogs aren't allowed on Lihou Island or its causeway, or around the bathing pools.
Can dogs go on the beaches in Herm and Alderney?+
On Herm, from 1 May to 30 September dogs aren't allowed on Shell Beach, Belvoir Bay, Fisherman's Beach and Hotel Beach, and are allowed on Bear's Beach and Moissonniere Beach. From 1 October to 30 April every Herm beach is open to dogs. On Alderney, from 1 June to 15 September dogs aren't allowed on Braye, Saye, Arch Bay and Corblets, and Longis is open to them before 8am and after 5pm. Clonque Bay, Platte Saline and Cat's Bay are open all year.
Where should I stay in the Channel Islands with a big dog?+
No hotel on our list publishes a weight limit, which is not the same as a promise that any size is welcome, so confirm when you book. For space, Longueville Manor has its own grounds, St Pierre Park has parkland with a lake, and Greenhills has four ground-floor rooms opening onto the gardens, for one dog over a year old. On the crossing, a big dog can stay in the car on Condor's ships, and its pet cabins take two pets at most.
Can I take my dog into Mont Orgueil or Castle Cornet?+
No. Mont Orgueil Castle in Gorey takes assistance dogs only, and Jersey Heritage's policy is no dogs at its sites. Castle Cornet in St Peter Port doesn't take pets either, and it is closed for bridge replacement from 7 September 2026, with reopening scheduled for the beginning of June 2027. Below Mont Orgueil, The Moorings welcomes well behaved, clean and dry dogs in Maddie's and on its terrace, which makes it a useful lunch stop.
Research updated 2026-10-04. Policies change, always confirm with the hotel.
