Where can my dog actually go?

The Aosta Valley is mostly flat valley floors between very big mountains, which suits a dog better than the postcards suggest. In Courmayeur you can walk the Dora Baltea riverside path towards Dolonne, the car-free Via Roma and the shaded floors of Val Ferret and Val Veny without a climb, and the Skyway Monte Bianco takes a muzzled dog on a lead all the way up to Punta Helbronner for EUR 15 to 16. Seven hotels on our list take dogs: five in Courmayeur, one in La Thuile, one in Cogne and one in Aosta town. Almost none of them put a dog policy on their own website, so dogs are on request nearly everywhere and the real terms come out when you ask.

Where the dog is allowed to sit is what separates these hotels, and only three say so. The Grand Hotel Royal e Golf on Via Roma lets dogs into its restaurants, cooks them a menu of homemade meatballs, venere rice with vegetables and artisan biscuits, and puts bowls and a bed in the room. The spa and the pool are off limits. The Bellevue in Cogne takes two dogs a room and seats them at the Bar à Fromage, La Brasserie du Bon Bec and the outside terrace, but not in Ristorante Bellevue or Le Petit Bellevue. The Duca d'Aosta in Aosta's old town allows dogs everywhere in the hotel except the breakfast room. Le Massif hands over a Monge holiday kit with a bed cover, bowl and mat, and the Grand Hotel Courmayeur Mont Blanc and Montana Lodge in La Thuile both provide a bed and bowls sized to the dog, but none of those three publishes a word about the restaurant or bar, so ask before you book.

Fees run from nothing at the Hotel Au Coeur des Neiges, where the only condition is that the dog is insured, through EUR 15 a day at the Duca d'Aosta, EUR 35 a day at Le Massif and the Bellevue, EUR 40 at the Grand Hotel Courmayeur Mont Blanc and EUR 50 a day at Montana Lodge. The Royal e Golf charges a fee but doesn't publish the amount. Weight limits are rarer than fees here. The Duca d'Aosta caps at 25 kg and takes adult dogs only, Le Massif takes one dog up to 30 kg in Deluxe rooms and above, and Montana Lodge takes one dog. The Royal e Golf, the Grand Hotel Courmayeur Mont Blanc and Au Coeur des Neiges publish no limit at all, which makes them the picks for a big dog, with the Royal e Golf the one that also gets the dog to dinner.

Two things catch people out. The Gran Paradiso National Park above Cogne only allows dogs in the valley-floor areas, always on a lead, with a short list of higher trails opening to them from 15 July to 15 September. The classic walks above Valnontey are off limits outside that window, so a Cogne stay is about the Sant'Orso meadow, the Lillaz valley path and the village lanes. And the Courmayeur and La Thuile hotels close between seasons, typically in May and again from October to late November, so check the opening dates against yours. Aosta town hotels stay open all year.

Before you go

What happens when you get there

Getting there
The valley has no commercial airport. Most people fly to Turin or Geneva and drive, or take the train to Aosta on the line from Turin via Ivrea, with Pré-Saint-Didier the end of the branch for Courmayeur. The Mont Blanc tunnel from Chamonix has no pet rule, a dog in a car simply drives through. Standard EU pet passport rules apply for Italy.
Skyway Monte Bianco
Dogs go up to Punta Helbronner on the Skyway from Entrèves if they're muzzled and on a lead. The dog ticket is EUR 15 in low season and EUR 16 in high season. It's the one big-mountain day in the valley you can do with the dog.
Gran Paradiso National Park
Dogs are allowed only in the valley-floor areas of the park and always on a lead. From 15 July to 15 September a specific list of trails published by the park also opens to dogs. Everywhere else in the park is closed to them. At Cogne that means the Sant'Orso meadow, the path to Lillaz and the village lanes year round, and the hikes above Valnontey only in the summer window.
Seasonal closures
Courmayeur and La Thuile hotels typically shut between the ski season and summer in May, and again from October to late November. Le Massif reopens on 28 November for winter and Montana Lodge closes in May and October. Aosta town hotels are open all year, and Cogne works as a cross-country and ice-climbing resort in winter and a walking base in summer.
Fees
Free at Au Coeur des Neiges as long as the dog is insured. EUR 15 a day at the Duca d'Aosta, EUR 35 a day at Le Massif and the Bellevue, EUR 40 a day at the Grand Hotel Courmayeur Mont Blanc and EUR 50 a day at Montana Lodge. The Royal e Golf charges a fee but hasn't published the figure, so ask when you book.
Weight limits and numbers
The Duca d'Aosta takes adult dogs up to 25 kg. Le Massif takes one dog up to 30 kg. Montana Lodge takes one dog and won't have it left alone in the room. The Bellevue takes two dogs a room. The Royal e Golf, the Grand Hotel Courmayeur Mont Blanc and Au Coeur des Neiges publish no weight or number limit.
Dogs at dinner and breakfast
The Royal e Golf seats dogs in its restaurants and the Bellevue at its cheese bar, brasserie and terrace. The Duca d'Aosta keeps them out of the breakfast room but allows them everywhere else. Le Massif, Montana Lodge, the Grand Hotel Courmayeur Mont Blanc and Au Coeur des Neiges publish nothing about their restaurants or bars, so check before you go.
Best walks
In Courmayeur, the Dora Baltea riverside path towards Dolonne and Pré-Saint-Didier, the flat Val Ferret and Val Veny valley floors and the car-free Via Roma. In La Thuile, the Dora di Verney river path, the Rutor falls trail from La Joux and, in summer, the Verney lake at the Little St Bernard pass. In Cogne, the Sant'Orso meadow, the valley path to Lillaz and its waterfalls and the lanes of Valnontey. In Aosta, the Roman old town, the Parco Saumont and the Dora Baltea path, with the Pila cable car leaving from the edge of town.
When to go
Summer, from late June to September, for the valley-floor walks, the Skyway and the open roads to the passes. If Cogne and the Gran Paradiso are the point of the trip, aim for 15 July to 15 September, the only window when the higher park trails open to dogs. Winter from December to April is ski season and the Courmayeur hotels are open and busy. Avoid May and the stretch from October to late November, when most Courmayeur and La Thuile hotels are closed, unless you're basing yourself in Aosta town.

Dog-friendly hotels in Courmayeur and the Aosta Valley

Questions we get asked

Dogs in Courmayeur and the Aosta Valley

Is Courmayeur dog friendly?+

Yes, with a caveat. Seven hotels across the valley take dogs, the valley floors give flat shaded walking and the Skyway Monte Bianco carries dogs to the top. The caveat is that almost no hotel publishes its dog policy on its own site, so you ask and confirm the terms before you book rather than reading them.

Can I take my dog up the Skyway Monte Bianco?+

Yes. Dogs are allowed up to Punta Helbronner if they're muzzled and on a lead. The dog ticket costs EUR 15 in low season and EUR 16 in high season.

Can I take my dog into the Gran Paradiso National Park?+

Only on the valley floors, and only on a lead. A short list of higher trails opens to dogs from 15 July to 15 September. Outside that list and that window the park is closed to dogs, which rules out the classic hikes above Valnontey for most of the year.

How much do Courmayeur hotels charge for dogs?+

Nothing at Au Coeur des Neiges, provided the dog is insured. EUR 35 a day at Le Massif and EUR 40 a day at the Grand Hotel Courmayeur Mont Blanc. Across the valley it's EUR 15 a day at the Duca d'Aosta, EUR 35 at the Bellevue in Cogne and EUR 50 at Montana Lodge in La Thuile. The Royal e Golf charges a fee but hasn't published the amount.

Where should I stay in the Aosta Valley with a big dog?+

The Grand Hotel Royal e Golf, the Grand Hotel Courmayeur Mont Blanc and Au Coeur des Neiges publish no weight limit, and the Royal e Golf also seats the dog in its restaurants. Le Massif caps at 30 kg and the Duca d'Aosta at 25 kg. Confirm by phone for a very large dog, since none of the no-limit hotels puts that in writing.

Which Aosta Valley hotels let dogs into the restaurant or bar?+

The Grand Hotel Royal e Golf in Courmayeur allows dogs in its restaurants. The Bellevue in Cogne allows them at the Bar à Fromage, La Brasserie du Bon Bec and the terrace, not in its two fine dining rooms. The Duca d'Aosta allows them everywhere except the breakfast room. The rest publish nothing, so ask.

Are Courmayeur hotels open all year?+

No. Most Courmayeur and La Thuile hotels close in May and again from October to late November. Le Massif reopens on 28 November and Montana Lodge closes in May and October. Aosta town hotels, including the Duca d'Aosta, stay open all year.

Can I drive through the Mont Blanc tunnel with a dog?+

Yes. The tunnel publishes no pet rule, so a dog in the car drives through from Chamonix like any other passenger. Standard EU pet passport rules apply for entering Italy.
