Where can my dog actually go?

Frankfurt is a flat, walkable river city for a dog, and the Main embankments on both banks are the default walk from almost every hotel on this list. The city publishes a proper flyer on dog rules, names its off-lead areas, and runs a two metre lead rule in parks, pedestrian zones and on public transport. Ten hotels made the cut, seven in Frankfurt itself and three out in the region: a castle in the Rheingau vineyards, a Rothschild villa in the Taunus forest and a park hotel in Mainz.

What separates these hotels is not the fee, it's where the dog is allowed to be, and in Frankfurt the honest answer is that almost nobody says. The Westin Grand, the JW Marriott, the Sofitel Opera and the NH Collection Spin Tower all take dogs in the room and publish nothing about the restaurant, the bar or breakfast. Roomers Frankfurt Central is the exception, and it's a no: dogs aren't in the restaurant or the Roomers Bar. Meliá Frankfurt City is the only city hotel doing more than charging a fee, with in-room dog amenities and mapped walking routes sold as a package. The real access stories are outside town. Hotel Burg Schwarzenstein in Johannisberg has a dog bed, bowls, treats and a three-dish dog menu as bookable extras and vineyard tracks from the gate. Villa Rothschild in Königstein has its own park opening onto the Taunus forest and the most generous written limits in the region.

Fees run from EUR 20 a night at the FAVORITE Parkhotel in Mainz, through EUR 25 a night at the Westin Grand and EUR 30 a night at Roomers Central, Hyatt Place Frankfurt Airport, the Sofitel and Burg Schwarzenstein, to EUR 35 a night per pet at the NH Collection and EUR 50 a day at the Meliá. The JW Marriott and Villa Rothschild charge once per stay, EUR 50 and EUR 60. Weight caps are tight in the city: the Westin, the NH Collection and Hyatt Place all stop at 25 kg. Villa Rothschild takes two dogs up to 40 kg each, which makes it the pick for a big dog.

Two warnings. The best address in Frankfurt, the Steigenberger Icon Frankfurter Hof, takes dogs on request for a fee but publishes no terms at all, so ring before you count on it. And a lot of the region's grand names have changed or gone: the Villa Kennedy reopened in December 2025 as The Florentin, the Kempinski Gravenbruch is now a Hilton, the Jumeirah is now the JW Marriott, and the Nassauer Hof in Wiesbaden is closed for renovation. None of the first three has published a dog policy we could confirm, so they're not on the list.

Before you go

What happens when you get there

Getting there by train
Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof is a straight ICE run from most of Germany and from Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam. On Deutsche Bahn a pet no bigger than a cat in a carrier travels free. A larger dog needs its own additional ticket and must be on a lead and wear a muzzle. On the regional Länder-Ticket a dog counts as an adult passenger, with Hund written in a name field.
Local transport
RMV covers the whole region, Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Mainz, Darmstadt, the Taunus and the Rheingau. The general German rule is that small pets in a carrier travel free and larger dogs may need an extra ticket, leashed and muzzled, but the exact RMV terms should be checked on rmv.de before you rely on them. Frankfurt's own rule is that dogs must be on a lead on public transport and at stops.
Lead rules
Frankfurt's lead rule is two metres maximum, and a lead is mandatory in restaurants, on public transport, in green spaces, pedestrian zones, nature reserves, on bridges, at stops and at gatherings. Pick up after your dog everywhere, including in the free-run areas. Dog tax applies to residents, not visitors.
Off-lead areas
The city names its free-run areas. Grüneburgpark is the one that matters for the Westend hotels, the Sofitel and the Meliá. An der Gerbermühle on the south bank serves Sachsenhausen and the Ostend. Others include Alter Rebstockpark, Ostparkstrasse, Huthpark, Volkspark Niddatal, Martin-Luther-King-Park, Sulzbachpark, Wörthspitze, Sindlinger Mainufer and the Höchster Stadtpark.
Dogs at breakfast
No Frankfurt hotel on this list publishes a yes. Roomers Frankfurt Central is a clear no for the restaurant and the Roomers Bar. The Westin, the JW Marriott, the Sofitel, the NH Collection, the Meliá and Hyatt Place say nothing either way, so ask by name when you book rather than assuming.
Weight limits
The Westin Grand, the NH Collection Spin Tower and Hyatt Place Frankfurt Airport all cap at 25 kg. Villa Rothschild takes dogs up to 40 kg. The JW Marriott, the Sofitel, Roomers Central, the Meliá, Burg Schwarzenstein and the FAVORITE Parkhotel publish no limit, which means ask, not assume.
Fees
EUR 20 a night at the FAVORITE Parkhotel. EUR 25 a night at the Westin Grand. EUR 30 a night at Roomers Central, Hyatt Place, the Sofitel and Burg Schwarzenstein. EUR 35 a night per pet at the NH Collection. EUR 50 a day at the Meliá. Per stay: EUR 50 at the JW Marriott, where the site also shows a EUR 15 a night line so confirm which applies, and EUR 60 at Villa Rothschild.
Two dogs
Villa Rothschild and the NH Collection Spin Tower take two. The Westin Grand, the JW Marriott and the FAVORITE Parkhotel take one. The rest don't publish a number.
Best walks
The Main riverbanks on both sides, with the museum embankment on the Sachsenhausen side and the Nizza garden on the north bank west of the Untermainbrücke. The Wallanlagen ring park on the line of the old walls, which the Westin, the JW Marriott and the Sofitel all sit on or beside. Grüneburgpark in the Westend for off-lead running. The Frankfurt Stadtwald south of Sachsenhausen and behind the airport, one of the largest city forests in Germany and the walk for Hyatt Place. Out of town, the vineyard tracks between Rüdesheim, Johannisberg and Eltville, the Rheinsteig along the whole stretch, and the Rüdesheim cable car up to the Niederwald monument, which takes dogs of all sizes free. From Villa Rothschild, the Königstein forest paths and the Grosser Feldberg loops.
When to go
The reason to come with a dog is the Rheingau and the Taunus, so plan around the vineyard tracks and the forest rather than the city. The Main embankments and the Wallanlagen work in any month. Seasonal closures, the cable car's operating months, Christmas market rules for dogs and the Hesse dangerous-breed list haven't been confirmed, so check before you go rather than assuming.

Dog-friendly hotels in Frankfurt and the Rhine-Main

Questions we get asked

Dogs in Frankfurt and the Rhine-Main

Is Frankfurt dog friendly?+

For walking, yes. The Main riverbanks, the Wallanlagen ring park and named off-lead areas like Grüneburgpark are all close to the centre, and the city publishes clear lead and clean-up rules. For hotels it's mixed: the luxury tier takes dogs in the room but publishes almost nothing about where else they can go, and Roomers Central keeps them out of the restaurant and bar.

How much do Frankfurt hotels charge for dogs?+

EUR 25 a night at the Westin Grand, EUR 30 a night at Roomers Central, the Sofitel Opera and Hyatt Place Frankfurt Airport, EUR 35 a night per pet at the NH Collection Spin Tower, and EUR 50 a day at the Meliá. The JW Marriott charges EUR 50 once per stay. Out of town, Villa Rothschild is EUR 60 per stay, Burg Schwarzenstein EUR 30 a night and the FAVORITE Parkhotel in Mainz EUR 20 a night.

Where should I stay near Frankfurt with a big dog?+

Villa Rothschild in Königstein, which takes two dogs up to 40 kg each. In the city, every hotel that publishes a limit stops at 25 kg. The JW Marriott, the Sofitel and Roomers Central publish no cap, so ring and ask before booking a large dog there.

Which Frankfurt hotels let dogs into the restaurant or bar?+

None on this list says yes. Roomers Frankfurt Central says no to both the restaurant and the Roomers Bar. The others don't publish a rule either way, so ask the hotel directly.

Can I take my dog on the train to Frankfurt?+

Yes. On Deutsche Bahn a small pet in a carrier travels free, and a larger dog needs its own additional ticket, a lead and a muzzle. On regional Länder-Tickets the dog counts as an adult passenger. Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof has direct ICE services from most of Germany and from Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam.

Where can my dog run off-lead in Frankfurt?+

The city's named free-run areas include Grüneburgpark and Alter Rebstockpark in the west, An der Gerbermühle on the south bank, Ostparkstrasse in the Ostend, Huthpark, Volkspark Niddatal and the Höchster Stadtpark. Everywhere else in green spaces the lead rule applies, two metres maximum.

Is the Rheingau worth a day trip with a dog?+

It's the best day out in the region. The vineyard tracks between Rüdesheim, Johannisberg and Eltville are open paths, the Rheinsteig runs along the whole stretch, and the Rüdesheim cable car to the Niederwald monument takes dogs of all breeds and sizes at no extra charge. Burg Schwarzenstein in Johannisberg is the hotel to stay at if you want to wake up in it.

Is the Steigenberger Frankfurter Hof dog friendly?+

It says pets are allowed on request for a fee, and that's all it publishes. No fee, weight limit or number of dogs is set out anywhere, so ring the hotel before you book.

Which hotel should I pick near Frankfurt Airport with a dog?+

Hyatt Place Frankfurt Airport in Gateway Gardens takes dogs up to 25 kg for EUR 30 a night. The Frankfurt Stadtwald begins a few hundred metres south with signed tracks to the Jacobiweiher pond, which is a far better walk than anything beside the terminals.
