Where can my dog actually go?

Halkidiki is three long green peninsulas with a lot of unorganised sand, which is most of what a dog needs from a beach holiday. Kassandra is the busy one, Sithonia is pine forest and coves, and the Athos side is quieter still. Thessaloniki, an hour or so up the road, has a flat seafront promenade that runs for kilometres. Twenty-five hotels across the two take dogs, fourteen on the coast and eleven in the city.

Start with the no, because it's the most useful sentence on the page. The big resort names in Halkidiki don't take dogs. Every Sani property, both Ikos resorts, Porto Carras, Miraggio, Pomegranate, Avaton, Mount Athos Resort, Anthemus, Ammoa, Zelia, Kassandra Palace and Alexandros Palace are all closed to them. In Thessaloniki, Makedonia Palace, Electra Palace and Daios are a no too. The yes comes from a smaller set that means it.

What separates them is where the dog can actually be, and on this coast the honest answer is mostly outdoors. No hotel here publishes dogs in its restaurant. The Acrotel five-stars at Elia beach have a fenced grass dog park, a dog pharmacy at reception and canoe trips you can take together. The Danai at Nikiti has areas where dogs go off the lead. Olympion Sunset at Skala Fourkas lets dogs onto the beach on a lead. Eagles Palace, Domes Noruz Kassandra, Kappa Resort and The Met all say plainly that dogs stay out of the dining areas, which is worth knowing before you book rather than at the door.

Fees run from nothing at The Danai and ecoSuites, through EUR 20 a night at Kappa and EUR 25 a night plus EUR 90 cleaning at Eagles, to EUR 100 at Domes Noruz Kassandra. In the city it's EUR 30 a stay at Capsis Bristol, EUR 50 at The Met and EUR 70 at MonAsty. Weight decides a lot here. The Excelsior and City Hotel take dogs under 5 kg, MERAVIA and NYX small dogs only, Acrotel and Kappa 15 kg, Eagles 20 kg. The Danai gives no weight limit at all, which makes it the pick for a big dog on the coast, and The Met at 25 kg is the pick in Thessaloniki.

Two traps. The Hyatt Regency calls itself Thessaloniki but sits out at Thermi near the airport, a drive from the waterfront. And a Blue Flag on a hotel's own beach frontage can keep your dog off that one stretch of sand. Eagles says so outright and Domes asks guests to follow the Blue Flag rules. It's a handful of hotel beaches, not the region. Most of Halkidiki's coast is unorganised sand where dogs are fine.

The terms aren't on the hotel's own website, so get them confirmed when you book, and ask about the terraces and the beach.

    The fullest written dog policy in the region. Dogs under 20 kg are welcome in the lobby and the gardens, and dogs from 11 to 20 kg go in the Villas or Bungalows. They're not in the restaurants, bars, spa or on the resort beach, which is a Blue Flag section. EUR 25 a night plus a EUR 90 cleaning fee, one dog.

What happens when you get there

Beaches
Dogs are fine on unorganised sand and in the sea, and that's most of Halkidiki's several hundred kilometres of coast. Halkidiki has 93 Blue Flag sections in 2026, many of them single hotel frontages, and that's where it bites: Eagles keeps dogs off its beach, Domes Noruz Kassandra follows the Blue Flag rules on its section, and whether dogs go on the Acrotel frontage at Elia isn't published. Karydi at Vourvourou, near Ekies, isn't flagged. Thessaloniki's city waterfront isn't a swimming beach.
Dogs at meals
No hotel here publishes dogs in its restaurant. Eagles, Domes Noruz Kassandra, Kappa Resort, Olympion Sunset and The Met all keep dogs out of dining areas, and at The Excelsior and City Hotel the dog waits in the room while you eat. Tavernas on the coast and in Ladadika mostly have outdoor tables, which is where a dog usually sits.
Weight limits
Under 5 kg at The Excelsior and City Hotel. Small dogs only at MERAVIA, NYX, ecoSuites and Olympion Sunset. 9 kg at MonAsty, 10 kg at Capsis Bristol and The Modernist, 15 kg across Acrotel and at Kappa, 20 kg at Eagles, the Hyatt and S Hotel, 25 kg at The Met. The Danai gives no limit. Domes Noruz Kassandra says small to medium without a figure, so ask.
Fees
Free at The Danai and ecoSuites. EUR 20 a night at Kappa, EUR 25 a night plus EUR 90 cleaning at Eagles, EUR 30 a day at the Acrotel five-stars, EUR 60 a night at the Hyatt. Per stay, it's EUR 30 at Capsis Bristol, EUR 35 per pet at Ekies, EUR 50 at The Met and EUR 70 at MonAsty. Domes Noruz Kassandra charges EUR 100, and it isn't published whether that's per stay or per night.
Leaving the dog in the room
The Met, Kappa, Capsis Bristol and Domes Noruz Kassandra don't allow it. Domes offers pet walking and sitting instead, and The Danai has sitters. The Excelsior and City Hotel expect the dog to wait in the room while you're at the restaurant or bar.
Getting there
Thessaloniki Makedonia Airport is the gateway for all of Halkidiki, with British Airways, easyJet, Jet2 and Ryanair among its airlines, and most UK and Irish routes are seasonal. It's roughly an hour by road to Kassandra and around two hours to Ouranoupoli or the far end of Sithonia. Dogs from the UK can't fly in the cabin, so plan on cargo or the drive.
Seasons
Most Halkidiki resorts open roughly spring to October and several close completely in winter, so check dates before planning a shoulder-season stay. Thessaloniki hotels are open all year.
Mount Athos
The Athos monastic state admits men only, by permit, so it isn't a dog outing. The boat cruises along the Athos coast from Ouranoupoli don't publish a dog policy, so ask at the harbour.
Best walks
In Thessaloniki, the seafront from the port past Aristotelous Square and the White Tower and on along the New Waterfront gardens is several kilometres of flat promenade, and Ano Poli and the Byzantine walls give a hillier walk with the Seich Sou forest above. In Halkidiki, the pine tracks around Vourvourou bay on Sithonia, the coast road between Elia and Nikiti, Possidi's sandy cape on Kassandra and the long Chroussou beach near Paliouri all suit a dog that likes space.
When to go
May, June and September are the months for a dog. July and August are hot on the peninsulas, so walks belong to early morning and evening. Most coastal resorts close from around October to spring, so Halkidiki is a summer-season trip, while Thessaloniki works all year and is at its best for walking in spring and autumn.

Is Halkidiki dog friendly?+

The coast is, the big resorts mostly aren't. Sani, Ikos, Porto Carras, Miraggio and most of the famous names don't take dogs. Fourteen coastal hotels do, led by Acrotel at Elia, The Danai, Eagles at Ouranoupoli and Domes Noruz Kassandra, and most of the shoreline is unorganised sand where dogs are fine.

Is Thessaloniki dog friendly?+

Yes, and easier than the coast. Eleven city hotels take dogs, most with written terms, and the long flat waterfront from the port to the New Waterfront gardens is an easy daily walk. Makedonia Palace, Electra Palace and Daios are a no.

Which Halkidiki resorts allow dogs?+

Acrotel Athena Pallas, Athena Residence, Elea Beach and Porto Brava at Sithonia, The Danai at Nikiti, Ekies at Vourvourou, ecoSuites at Toroni and Kelyfos near Neos Marmaras. On Kassandra, Domes Noruz Kassandra, MERAVIA, Olympion Sunset and Kappa Resort. On the Athos side, Eagles Palace and Eagles Villas.

Do Sani and Ikos allow dogs?+

No. Every Sani property and both Ikos resorts say pets are not allowed, as do Porto Carras, Miraggio, Pomegranate, Avaton and Mount Athos Resort.

Where should I stay in Halkidiki with a big dog?+

The Danai at Nikiti gives no weight limit and charges nothing for one dog. Eagles Palace and Eagles Villas take dogs up to 20 kg, with dogs over 11 kg in the villas or bungalows. In Thessaloniki, The Met takes dogs up to 25 kg. Avoid The Excelsior and City Hotel, which stop at 5 kg.

Can dogs go on the beach in Halkidiki?+

Yes, on unorganised sand and in the sea, which is most of the coast. Not at any hotel that publishes a rule. Eagles, Domes Noruz Kassandra, Kappa, Olympion Sunset and The Met keep dogs out of dining areas. For dinner with your dog, the outdoor tables at the tavernas along the coast and in Thessaloniki's Ladadika are the usual answer.
