Where can my dog actually go?

Los Angeles is a car city, and that shapes a dog trip more than any hotel policy. Of 40 hotels we researched through our booking partner, 36 take dogs, and the four that don't are the Ritz-Carlton at LA Live, the JW Marriott next door, Soho Warehouse and the Charlie. The good news is the top end is generous. Hotel Bel-Air takes two dogs to 45 lb on its 12 acres of gardens with a personalised biscuit. The Four Seasons at Beverly Hills charges nothing, seats dogs on the restaurant patios and serves a Bone Appetit room-service menu. Chateau Marmont seats dogs on its courtyard terrace. The Sofitel's Very Important Pets programme is free with no size limit. Loews Hollywood takes dogs to 75 lb with a pet room-service menu.

Seven are free: all three Kimptons (Everly, Palomar and Wilshire), the Four Seasons, the Sofitel, the LINE in Koreatown and the Hoxton Downtown. The Kimptons and the LINE also publish no weight limit. Elsewhere expect a one-time fee of USD 50 to 250 per stay rather than a nightly charge, with the Hollywood Roosevelt at USD 75, Hotel Figueroa at USD 50 for two dogs, and Chateau Marmont and the Luxe at USD 250. Weight caps sit mostly at 25 to 50 lb. The Beverly Hills Marriott stops at 20 lb, the Conrad, Omni, Sheraton Grand and Dream at 25 lb, and the Hollywood Roosevelt and Loews go to 60 and 75 lb.

Two things to plan around. LA County bans dogs from nearly every beach, so the sand is out unless you drive to Rosie's in Long Beach or the Leo Carrillo stretch in Malibu. And the off-leash parks are a drive from most hotels: Runyon Canyon above Hollywood, Laurel Canyon Dog Park, Silver Lake Dog Park, the Arts District Dog Park downtown and Westwood Park on the Westside. The exceptions are Hotel June, with Westchester Park's fenced dog run across the street, the Palihouse a short walk from West Hollywood Park's dog run, and Silver Lake Pool and Inn with the reservoir loop and dog park nearby.

What happens when you get there

Beaches
Dogs are banned from the sand at Santa Monica, Venice, Manhattan, Hermosa and almost every LA County beach, and the beach bike path is on-leash only. The legal exceptions are Rosie's Dog Beach in Long Beach, about 40 minutes from Downtown, and the northern stretches of Leo Carrillo State Beach in Malibu. Plan the beach as a day out, not a hotel walk.
Off-leash parks
Runyon Canyon above Hollywood is the famous one, with off-leash trails and city views, a short drive from every Hollywood hotel. Laurel Canyon Dog Park serves West Hollywood, Silver Lake Dog Park the east side, the Arts District Dog Park and the small dog park at LA Live serve Downtown, and Westwood Park and Barrington Dog Park serve the Westside. Westchester Park's fenced run is across the street from Hotel June.
Patios and pool decks
The Four Seasons seats dogs on the outdoor patios of its dining outlets. Chateau Marmont seats them on the courtyard terrace. Hotel June's Caravan Cantina terrace and the W Los Angeles outdoor tables take dogs. The Hoxton Downtown allows dogs on the pool deck and at Moonlark's outdoor seating. The Conrad's Beaudry Room is pet-friendly for drinks. The InterContinental Downtown, the Aster and Hotel Bel-Air keep dogs out of all bars and restaurants, and the Roosevelt, Biltmore, Sheraton Grand, Hollywood Grande, Dream and Palihouse keep them off the pool deck.
Leaving the dog in the room
The Hollywood Roosevelt, Loews, Kimpton Wilshire, Kimpton Palomar, Hotel Per La, the W Los Angeles and the InterContinental Downtown allow a well-behaved dog alone in the room, usually with a Do Not Disturb sign and no housekeeping. Dream Hollywood and the Omni allow it crated. Hotel Bel-Air, the Four Seasons, the Sofitel, Fairmont Century Plaza, Hotel Figueroa, the Biltmore, the Luxe, the Hoxton, Kimpton Everly, the LINE, the Sheraton Grand, W Hollywood, the Godfrey, Le Petit Pali and the Conrad don't. Loews will collect a barking dog to the front desk at USD 10 an hour.

October to May. Summer pavements burn paws by mid-morning and Runyon Canyon has no shade, so walk at dawn and after sunset if you come in July or August.
