Santa Barbara is a good dog town with one catch that surprises people. The city doesn't allow dogs on the sand at East Beach, West Beach or Leadbetter Beach, which are the three central beaches by the harbour and Stearns Wharf and the ones most waterfront hotels face. Leashed dogs get the paved path along Cabrillo Boulevard beside them. The dog beach everyone points you to is Arroyo Burro, known as Hendry's, with Douglas Family Preserve on the bluff above it.
Nine hotels are on our list, and what separates them is where the dog can be once you've checked in. Kimpton Canary welcomes dogs at the nightly wine reception in the living room and has a dog menu on room service, though dogs aren't in the dining areas, including Finch & Fork. Lavender Inn in Ojai serves breakfast with your dog on the veranda. San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito takes dogs in every cottage, with an in-room pet dining menu. Ojai Valley Inn is clear the other way: on a lead everywhere, and not at the pools, in the spa village, on the golf course or in Olivella. The Winston in Solvang has dogs on a lead in its common areas. At Palihouse, The Landsby, The Genevieve and Simpson House Inn the shared spaces aren't published, so ask by name.
Fees run from nothing at Kimpton Canary to USD 300 plus 15% tax per pet at Ojai Valley Inn. In between: USD 65 one-time at Lavender Inn, USD 100 at The Landsby and The Genevieve, USD 100 per dog at The Winston, USD 125 plus tax at Palihouse and USD 250 per stay at San Ysidro Ranch. Simpson House Inn charges USD 125 per pet per night, which adds up fast. For a big dog, Kimpton Canary is the pick, with no size, weight or breed restrictions. The Landsby takes dogs up to 50 lbs (about 22.7 kg) each. Palihouse stops at 30 lbs (about 13.6 kg), and Simpson House Inn and The Genevieve at 20 lbs (about 9.1 kg).
Know the gaps before you plan around the water. We have nothing listed yet in the Funk Zone, on the waterfront or in Goleta, and nothing in Los Olivos or Los Alamos. Several well-reviewed inns say no in writing: Santa Barbara Inn, Harbor View Inn, Harbor House Inn, Cheshire Cat Inn and Montecito Inn don't take pets, and the main inn at Fess Parker Wine Country Inn in Los Olivos doesn't either. Ojai and the Santa Ynez Valley are inland and a different trip from the coast, hotter in summer and a drive from any beach.

Before you go
What happens when you get there
- City beaches
- Dogs aren't allowed on the sand at East Beach, West Beach or Leadbetter Beach. That's three named beaches in the centre, not the whole coast, but they're the ones by the harbour and Stearns Wharf. Leashed dogs can use the paved coastal path along Cabrillo Boulevard beside them.
- Off-lead
- The city marks off-lead areas west of the steps at Shoreline Park's beach, on the beaches at Thousand Steps and Mesa Lane Steps, and at the MacKenzie Park Off-Leash Dog Area. Douglas Family Preserve allows dogs off the lead in certain areas under sight and voice control, with a lead carried at all times. Arroyo Burro Beach is promoted locally as off-lead, but it's a county park and the exact boundary and hours aren't confirmed, so check the county's page before you unclip.
- Montecito and Goleta
- Butterfly Beach in Montecito and Summerland Beach take dogs on a lead. In Goleta, Ellwood Mesa, Goleta Beach and Lake Los Carneros are on-lead walks, and the protected dunes at Coal Oil Point are off limits.
- Where dogs can't go
- Lotusland takes no pets at all, and cars with pets in them are turned away without a refund. Channel Islands National Park doesn't allow pets in the park. The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is promoted as welcoming leashed dogs on its paths, but the Garden's own rule isn't confirmed, so check with it first.
- Buses and trains
- Santa Barbara MTD buses take small animals in approved carriers, so a dog too big for a carrier can't ride. Amtrak's national rule is 20 lbs for pet and carrier combined, one pet per customer, on trips of up to seven hours on most routes. Check the Pacific Surfliner's own pet page before you book a seat.
- Patios and tasting rooms
- The local tourism board lists dog-friendly patios and tasting rooms in the Funk Zone, the Presidio neighbourhood and on State Street, and names The Lark, Loquita and The Brewhouse, which has a dog menu, for outdoor tables. It names Fox Wine Co., Pali Wine Company and Melville on State Street as welcoming dogs inside and out. Those are the board's listings, so ring the tasting room before you turn up.
- Weight limits
- No limit at Kimpton Canary and none stated at The Winston. The Landsby takes 50 lbs (about 22.7 kg) per dog and 80 lbs (about 36.3 kg) combined for two. Palihouse takes one dog under 30 lbs (about 13.6 kg). Simpson House Inn caps at 20 lbs (about 9.1 kg), and The Genevieve at 20 lbs per dog and 40 lbs (about 18.1 kg) for two.
- Reserving a dog room
- The Landsby and The Genevieve ask you to ring to secure a pet-friendly room. Simpson House Inn needs written approval before arrival, and an unapproved pet brings a USD 500 penalty. Palihouse's fee has been published at two different amounts, so confirm the current figure with the hotel when you book.
- Best walks
- The paved path along Cabrillo Boulevard for a leashed waterfront walk, Douglas Family Preserve on the bluff above Arroyo Burro for off-lead time in the marked areas, the beaches at Thousand Steps and Mesa Lane Steps, and the beach west of the steps at Shoreline Park. Butterfly Beach in Montecito on a lead. Inspiration Point is a 4-mile trail where dogs are welcome, and Elings Park has off-lead access with an annual membership. In Goleta, Ellwood Mesa and Lake Los Carneros on a lead. In Ojai, Libby Park is straight through the Arcade from Lavender Inn.
- When to go
- The coast works at any time of year for a dog, and the city beach rule carries no season, so East Beach, West Beach and Leadbetter are out whenever you come. The warning is inland. Ojai and the Santa Ynez Valley run hotter than the coast in summer, so if you're staying at Ojai Valley Inn, Lavender Inn or in Solvang in the hot months, walk early and late and keep the middle of the day for shade.

Questions we get asked
Dogs in Santa Barbara
Is Santa Barbara dog friendly?+
Yes, with one rule to know. Nine hotels on our list take dogs, the city marks several off-lead areas and plenty of patios and tasting rooms welcome them. The catch is that dogs aren't allowed on the sand at East Beach, West Beach or Leadbetter Beach, the three central city beaches.
Can dogs go on the beach in Santa Barbara?+
Not on East Beach, West Beach or Leadbetter Beach. The city's marked off-lead areas include the beaches at Thousand Steps and Mesa Lane Steps and the beach west of the steps at Shoreline Park. Butterfly Beach and Summerland Beach take dogs on a lead. Arroyo Burro, or Hendry's, is the well-known dog beach, but check the county's page for where and when off-lead applies.
How much do Santa Barbara hotels charge for dogs?+
Nothing at Kimpton Canary. USD 65 one-time at Lavender Inn, USD 100 per stay at The Landsby and The Genevieve, USD 100 per dog at The Winston, USD 125 plus tax at Palihouse and USD 250 per stay at San Ysidro Ranch. Ojai Valley Inn charges USD 300 plus 15% tax per pet, and Simpson House Inn USD 125 per pet per night.
Where should I stay in Santa Barbara with a big dog?+
Kimpton Canary, which has no size, weight or breed restrictions and no fee. In the Santa Ynez Valley, The Winston states no size limit and The Landsby takes dogs up to 50 lbs (about 22.7 kg) each. Avoid Palihouse, Simpson House Inn and The Genevieve, which are for small dogs only.
Which Santa Barbara hotels take two dogs?+
Ojai Valley Inn, The Landsby, The Winston and The Genevieve all publish a two-dog limit. Palihouse takes one. Kimpton Canary, San Ysidro Ranch, Lavender Inn and Simpson House Inn don't publish a number, so ask before you book.
Can I leave my dog alone in the hotel room in Santa Barbara?+
At Kimpton Canary, yes, if the dog is crated and quiet and the Pet in Room hanger is on the door. Not at Palihouse, Lavender Inn, Ojai Valley Inn or The Winston. The other hotels don't publish a rule, so ask.
Are there dog-friendly hotels on the Santa Barbara waterfront or in the Funk Zone?+
None on our list yet. The three downtown hotels we list are Kimpton Canary, Palihouse and Simpson House Inn, and we have nothing in Goleta either. On the waterfront, Santa Barbara Inn, Harbor View Inn and Harbor House Inn state that they don't take pets.
Can I take my dog to the Channel Islands or Lotusland?+
No to both. Channel Islands National Park doesn't allow pets in the park, and Lotusland takes no pets and turns away vehicles with pets inside without a refund.
