Where can my dog actually go?

Santa Monica is the beach people picture when they imagine Los Angeles with a dog, and the first thing to know is that the dog is not allowed on it. The city bans dogs from the sand and the water along the whole shoreline, the Pier takes service dogs only, and the beach bike path is on-leash. What you get instead is Palisades Park, the mile-long bluff-top garden along Ocean Avenue that half the hotels on this list face, and the fenced off-leash runs at Pacific Street, Joslyn Park and Airport Park. Of 15 hotels we researched through our booking partner, 12 take dogs. The Huntley, the Hilton and the Ambrose don't.

The hotels are better than the beach rule suggests. The Fairmont Miramar takes dogs of any size on its five-acre garden estate, seats them on the outdoor terraces of FIG and the Lobby Lounge and serves a pet room-service menu. The Regent has no weight limit, a dog room-service menu, an on-site relief area and folds the pet fee into its resort fee. Sandbourne has a private dog park on the property and a dog menu. The Viceroy runs a weekend Wags and Brunch for dogs on the Sugar Palm patio. Shutters and Casa del Mar, the two beachfront grandes dames, seat dogs at every outdoor table but cap them at 25 lb.

Fees run USD 100 to 250 a stay. The Regent is the only one with nothing extra, since the pet fee is inside the USD 90 resort fee. The Hyatt Centric caps at USD 150 a stay for longer trips. Oceana charges the most at USD 250 a pet. Weight caps are the thing to check: no limit at the Fairmont Miramar, the Regent and the Eden, 100 lb combined at Sandbourne, 50 lb at the Viceroy and Oceana, 45 lb at the Proper, 40 lb at the Hyatt Centric, 25 lb at Shutters, Casa del Mar and the Georgian. Only the Regent lets the dog stay alone in the room.

What happens when you get there

The beach
Dogs are banned from the sand and the water on every Santa Monica and Venice beach, and only service dogs may go on the Pier. The Marvin Braude bike path along the back of the beach is on-leash. The nearest legal dog beach is Rosie's in Long Beach, about 45 minutes south, or the northern stretch of Leo Carrillo State Beach in Malibu, about 40 minutes north.
Where the dog can run
Palisades Park runs along the Ocean Avenue bluff for on-leash walks with the ocean below, and Tongva Park sits behind it. The fenced off-leash parks are Pacific Street Dog Park in Ocean Park, a short walk from Shutters, Casa del Mar and the Viceroy, Joslyn Park on Kensington Road, and Airport Park's larger run inland. Sandbourne has its own dog park on site.
Patios and brunch
Shutters and Casa del Mar seat dogs at every outdoor table, including the lobby bars. The Fairmont Miramar seats them on the outdoor areas of FIG and the Lobby Lounge. The Viceroy runs Wags and Brunch for dogs on the Sugar Palm patio at weekends with a dog menu and pup-tails. Sandbourne welcomes dogs in its courtyard and terrace. Maison Twenty Seven allows dogs in all public areas. Oceana asks that dogs stay in the suite.
Leaving the dog
The Regent allows a dog alone in the room. The Fairmont Miramar, Shutters, Casa del Mar and the Georgian don't, at any time. The Proper, Viceroy, Sandbourne, Oceana, Hyatt Centric, the Eden and Maison Twenty Seven don't publish a rule, so ask. Shutters and Casa del Mar arrange sitting, grooming and walking through the concierge, and the Viceroy books a dog walker.
Weight limits and fees
No limit at the Fairmont Miramar, the Regent and the Eden. 100 lb combined at Sandbourne. 50 lb at the Viceroy, Oceana and Maison Twenty Seven, 45 lb at the Proper, 40 lb at the Hyatt Centric, 25 lb at Shutters, Casa del Mar and the Georgian. Fees: nothing extra at the Regent, USD 100 a dog at the Proper, USD 125 a stay at the Fairmont Miramar, Shutters and Casa del Mar, USD 150 at the Viceroy, Sandbourne, the Eden and Maison Twenty Seven, USD 250 a dog at Oceana. The Hyatt Centric charges USD 50 a night capped at USD 150, and the Georgian USD 125 a night.
Still to confirm
Oceana's weight limit shows as 50 lb on some listings and 20 lb on others. Maison Twenty Seven's FAQ says 50 lb and a nightly fee while Hilton says 25 lb and a one-time fee. The Georgian publishes 25 lb but some guides list 50 lb with a size-based fee. The Eden still shows as no-pets on older listings though the hotel confirms dogs. Ask before booking.

Palisades Park end to end along the bluff at sunset, the Marvin Braude bike path from the Pier to Venice on the lead, Tongva Park's paths behind Ocean Avenue, Montana Avenue's dog-friendly shops from Maison Twenty Seven, and the drive north to Leo Carrillo for the one run on sand.
When to go
September and October for the warmest water and the fewest crowds, or any month for the bluff walks. June brings the marine layer, so mornings are grey until noon.

They can't be left alone in the room and can't go on the sand outside the door. Casa del Mar next door has the same policy.
