“Opened in 1879 and still the village's grand hotel, the Zermatterhof sits on Bahnhofstrasse in the centre of car-free Zermatt with the Matterhorn framed from many of its 77 rooms. Interiors mix belle epoque bones with alpine wood, and the Vita Borni spa, indoor pool and four restaurants keep it self-contained in winter. It suits couples and families who want a classic address within minutes of the Gornergrat railway and Sunnegga funicular. Small dogs are accepted for CHF 45 a night and the hotel supplies a bed or blanket and two bowls, though the horse-drawn carriage transfer is reserved for guests without dogs.
