Hotel Monte Rosa

Zermatt's original 1855 hotel, dogs of any size welcome, central Bahnhofstrasse

This hotel is part of the Daisy Curated Collection. Its information has been researched and verified, but Daisy has not yet personally stayed here. When she does, this page will be upgraded to a full Daisy Verified inspection.

Daisy's Assessment
Researched and verified. Not yet personally stayed.
The Monte Rosa is the oldest hotel in Zermatt and the house Edward Whymper set out from before the first Matterhorn ascent in 1865, now run as a boutique hotel under Michel Reybier Hospitality with rooms named after alpine flowers. It sits on Bahnhofstrasse in the middle of the car-free village, a six-minute walk from the station, with the Belle Époque restaurant, Edward's Bar-Café and the Whymper Stube on site. It suits travellers who want history and a central address over a resort-style spa, since the wellness area and pool are shared with the sister Mont Cervin Palace. Dogs of any size are accepted with prior consent for CHF 40 per night, and the hotel closes between the summer and winter seasons, most recently mid October to mid December.

Why it's in the collection

From the front door it is a short stroll to the Gornergrat and Sunnegga valley stations, so the Riffelsee and Stellisee lake walks and the meadow path down through Findeln are all easy days out. The Vispa promenade runs a few streets away for a quick evening leg-stretch, and the Zmutt path begins at the top of the village.

Best suited for

Dogs are welcome with the hotel's prior consent for CHF 40 per night but may not enter the wellness area or kids club.

The open question

How the welcome translates in person, at dinner and around the hotel. That's what a Daisy stay will confirm.

Request the dog when booking, as the hotel's terms require prior consent, and guests must supervise their dog throughout the stay or arrange a sitter at their own cost. Dogs are excluded from the wellness area and kids club. Dining and bar access is not published, so ask at reception about the terrace at Edward's Bar-Café in summer. The hotel meets guests at the village entrance or Zermatt station with its electric car, but has not published whether dogs ride in it, so confirm ahead or walk the six minutes along Bahnhofstrasse. From Täsch, dogs travel on the Matterhorn Gotthard shuttle train with a dog ticket. The hotel closes each autumn between seasons, most recently from mid October to mid December.

Where we can't yet confirm a detail first-hand, we mark it plainly rather than guess. A Daisy stay will close every gap.
