Tapeworm tablet before you land in Malta: 24 to 120 hours before arrival
Your dog needs a tapeworm tablet from a vet no less than 24 hours and no more than 5 days (120 hours) before you land. Count back from your arrival time, not your departure. That means a vet appointment where you are now, two or three days before the flight, and the vet writes the product, the date and the exact time into the passport or certificate. Ireland, Northern Ireland, Malta, Finland and Norway are the only places in Europe that ask for this, and Great Britain asks on the way back in. Nowhere else does. Miss the window and the dog is refused.

Arriving in Malta from outside the EU: what happens at the airport
Malta sends a vet to meet your flight, but only if you filed the online Pets Arrival Notification first, and without it your dog can be refused entry. Submit it through the government portal before you travel and land at Luqa. Dogs also need a tapeworm treatment 24 to 120 hours before arrival. If your flight is delayed, call or text +356 9917 0532 any time. Carry the original EU health certificate, chip and rabies records with the tapeworm entry.

Leaving Great Britain with your dog: the certificate and the airlines
Your dog needs an Animal Health Certificate from an Official Vet, issued within 10 days of entering the EU. It then covers 6 months of travel in the EU and 6 months to come home. Regular practices charge £150 to £300 for it. Independent AHC vets who do nothing else charge from £69, often meeting you in a car park in the evening. Only a handful of airlines take a dog in the cabin out of the UK, and three of those refuse Gatwick. No airline brings a pet dog back into the UK in the cabin, so plan the return by LeShuttle or ferry before you book anything.

Book your dog the moment you book your seat.
Every airline caps pets per flight, some at two, and the “72 hours before departure” on their website is a deadline, not a plan. If the pet spots are gone you don't fly with your dog, and the airline usually won't refund you. Add the dog the same day, then confirm it's on the booking in writing.
