Where can my dog actually go?

This page covers two separate regions at opposite ends of Belgium, and they ask different things of a dog. The coast is sand, dike and dunes, where every town writes its own beach rule. The Ardennes side is forest, lake and river valley. Fourteen hotels on our list take dogs. Eight are on the coast: Hotel Britannia, Hotel Atlanta Knokke and La Réserve Resort in Knokke-Heist, ABC Hotel and Hotel Beach Palace in Blankenberge, Beach Hotel De Haan, C-Hotels Andromeda in Ostend and Casino Hotel in Koksijde. Six are on the Ardennes side: Manoir de Lébioles in Spa, Le Val d'Amblève in Stavelot, Maison Pal'Ange near Durbuy, Hotel Panorama in Bouillon, Hotel Bütgenbacher Hof in Bütgenbach and Golden Lakes Hotel at the Lacs de l'Eau d'Heure.

What separates them is not the fee, it's where the dog is allowed to be. On the coast, Hotel Britannia takes dogs in the rooms, the breakfast room and the restaurant. Casino Hotel takes them in the breakfast room. Hotel Atlanta Knokke has written house rules: dogs in the restaurant on the lead and under the table, away from the buffet. La Réserve Resort allows small dogs in the bar. C-Hotels Andromeda is a clear no at breakfast. On the Ardennes side the terrace is as far as it goes. Maison Pal'Ange has dogs on the restaurant terrace but not inside, Manoir de Lébioles keeps them to the rooms and the terrace, and Bütgenbacher Hof puts dogs in its two annexes and on the terrace, not in the main building. At Golden Lakes dogs stay in the room while you're at breakfast, in the restaurant or in the spa.

Fees start at EUR 10 per pet per stay at Le Val d'Amblève, a basis to confirm when you book, then EUR 15 a night at Casino Hotel and Golden Lakes, EUR 20 at Atlanta, Panorama and Maison Pal'Ange, EUR 22 at C-Hotels Andromeda and EUR 25 at ABC Hotel, Beach Hotel De Haan, Beach Palace and Bütgenbacher Hof. Britannia charges EUR 40 per dog per night, Manoir de Lébioles EUR 49 and La Réserve Resort EUR 75. None of the fourteen publishes a weight limit, so ask before you book. ABC Hotel is the pick for a big dog because it's the only one that prices a large dog, at EUR 30 a night, though it doesn't say where small ends and large begins. Maison Pal'Ange is the only hotel that publishes a number of dogs, two per room.

The trap on the coast is the summer beach rule, and it changes at every town boundary. Knokke-Heist keeps dogs off the beach between 10:00 and 20:00 from 15 March to 15 October, with one all-day exception at Het Zoute. Blankenberge closes its central beach to dogs from the Easter holiday to 15 September but keeps the stretch west of the harbour pier off-lead all year. De Haan, Ostend and Koksijde each have their own dates and hours, set out below. Read the signs at each beach access and don't carry one town's rule into the next.

A few plain nos are worth knowing before you search. Leopold Hotel Ostend takes service animals only. The C-Hotels group doesn't take dogs at Burlington in Ostend, Silt in Middelkerke or Helios in Blankenberge, although its Andromeda does. My Hotel in Malmedy says in its terms that pets aren't allowed. More widely in the Ardennes, the four and five-star hotels rarely publish a dog policy at all, so get a yes in writing first. At Hotel Beach Palace dogs are taken only in certain room types, and Manoir de Lébioles needs to approve your dog before you arrive.

Before you go

What happens when you get there

Beach rule: Knokke-Heist
From 15 March to 15 October dogs aren't allowed on the beach between 10:00 and 20:00. Outside those hours, and all day from 16 October to 14 March, dogs can be on the whole beach off the lead under supervision. The one all-day, year-round exception is at Het Zoute, from east of Surfers Paradise near Appelzakstraat to the Dutch border, where dogs can be off the lead at any time. Since May 2026 dogs on a lead are also allowed on the terraces and in the bar areas of the town's beach bars.
Beach rule: Blankenberge
Blankenberge has three zones, and Zone 1, from the Westerstaketsel (the west harbour pier) to the De Haan border, is off-lead all year. Zone 2, the central beach from the Oosterstaketsel to the J. Gadeynehelling, is closed to dogs from the Easter holiday to 15 September and on-lead the rest of the year. Zone 3, from the J. Gadeynehelling towards Zeebrugge, is on-lead from 15 March to 15 October and off-lead from 16 October to 14 March. There are two fenced dog runs, one of them near Sea Life.
Beach rule: De Haan and Wenduine
From 1 June to 15 September, between 10:00 and 19:00, dogs aren't allowed in the five lifeguarded beach zones, the dunes there or the sea. Outside the guarded zones dogs can be on the beach almost any time. At two bathing zones, Vosseslag and Harendijke, you can cross with a dog on a short lead of 1.5 m to reach the dog areas. Keep to a short lead in the Duinbossen woods, and note that the Zandpanne reserve is closed to dogs.
Beach rule: Ostend
From 1 October to 31 March dogs can be on the beach at any time. In April, May, June and September it's before 10:00 and after 18:30, and in July and August before 10:00 and after 20:00. Three stretches take dogs all year at any hour: from groyne 5 on the Oosteroever to the Bredene border, the Klein Strand between the Westerstaketsel and the western breakwater on the lead, and from Westlaan in Raversijde to the Middelkerke border on the lead. There's also the Hondenbos, an off-lead woodland path near Karperstraat.
Beach rule: Koksijde
The lead is required everywhere in Koksijde, Oostduinkerke and Sint-Idesbald, the beach included. From 16 September to 31 May dogs can be on the beach at any time. From 1 June to 15 September they're allowed before 10:30 and after 18:30, and during the day only in three marked dog zones: about 350 m at Sint-Idesbald by the De Panne border, about 1,170 m at Koksijde from Elisabethplein to G. Scottlaan, and about 1,625 m at Oostduinkerke from F. Timmermanslaan to Paardevissersweg. Dogs are never allowed in the lifeguarded zones.
Coast tram and trains
De Lijn buses and the coast tram carry dogs free: small animals on your lap, bigger dogs on a lead and on the floor. A muzzle is only required if the dog could be a danger to other passengers, and the driver can refuse an animal that could endanger, dirty or bother them. On Belgian trains a small pet travels free in a carrier no larger than 30 x 55 x 30 cm, and a dog on a lead needs a EUR 3 Pet Supplement. A muzzle isn't compulsory on the train but the attendant may ask for one, and pets can't use the seats or tables.
Dogs at meals
Hotel Britannia in Knokke takes dogs in the breakfast room and the restaurant, and Casino Hotel in Koksijde takes them in the breakfast room. Hotel Atlanta Knokke allows dogs in the restaurant on the lead and under the table, away from the buffet. C-Hotels Andromeda in Ostend and Golden Lakes are a clear no at breakfast. On the Ardennes side no hotel says yes to dogs at breakfast in writing, so the terrace at Maison Pal'Ange, Manoir de Lébioles or Bütgenbacher Hof is where your dog joins you.
High Fens and the Caves of Han
The Hautes Fagnes-Eifel nature park accepts dogs on a lead across most of its territory, and the few closed zones are signed on site. The detailed zone map around Botrange, Baraque Michel and Mont Rigi is not confirmed here, so read the boards at the trailhead. At the Caves of Han dogs are allowed in the cave on the Cave Discovery visit only, on a lead at all times, and not in the Wildlife Park, even carried in a bag. There's no kennel on site, and whether dogs can ride the tram up to the cave entrance is not confirmed.
Best walks
On the coast, the off-lead stretch at Het Zoute from east of Surfers Paradise to the Dutch border, the Zegemeer lake loop at Albertstrand, the beach west of Blankenberge's harbour pier towards Wenduine, the Fonteintjes dune ponds running towards Zeebrugge, the Duinbossen woods behind De Haan on a short lead, Ostend's sea dyke west towards Mariakerke with the Klein Strand by the harbour mouth, and the Hoge Blekker and Doornpanne dunes at Koksijde. On the Ardennes side, the forest tracks straight off the Lébioles estate above Creppe and the open moorland of the Fagne de Malchamps south of Spa, the path of roughly 10 km around the Bütgenbach lake, the Semois riverbank below Bouillon and the Tombeau du Géant viewpoint at Botassart, the woodland tracks along the Plate Taille lake at the Lacs de l'Eau d'Heure, and the dolmens and menhirs at Wéris.
When to go
For the coast, autumn to spring is the easy season. Dogs have the whole Knokke-Heist beach off the lead all day from 16 October to 14 March, Ostend's beach at any time from 1 October to 31 March, and Koksijde's on the lead at any time from 16 September to 31 May. Summer is harder work. Knokke-Heist keeps dogs off the beach between 10:00 and 20:00 from 15 March to 15 October, Blankenberge's central beach is closed to dogs from the Easter holiday to 15 September, and De Haan's lifeguarded zones are closed during the day from 1 June to 15 September, so a July or August stay means early mornings, evenings and the year-round dog zones. On the Ardennes side the terrace is the only place a dog joins you at the table at Maison Pal'Ange, Manoir de Lébioles and Bütgenbacher Hof, so go when you'd be happy eating outside.

Dog-friendly hotels in Ardennes and Belgian Coast

Questions we get asked

Dogs in Ardennes and Belgian Coast

Are the Ardennes and the Belgian coast dog friendly?+

Yes, with conditions on both sides. Every coast town covered here lets dogs onto the sand at some hours, but each sets its own rule and several keep dogs off the main beach during summer days. In the Ardennes the walking is forest, lake and river, but the four and five-star hotels rarely publish a dog policy, and the ones that take dogs mostly keep them to the room and the terrace. Fourteen hotels on our list take dogs, eight on the coast and six on the Ardennes side.

How much do hotels on the Belgian coast and in the Ardennes charge for dogs?+

From EUR 10 per pet per stay at Le Val d'Amblève in Stavelot, a basis worth confirming, to EUR 75 per dog per night at La Réserve Resort in Knokke. Casino Hotel and Golden Lakes charge EUR 15 a night, Atlanta, Panorama and Maison Pal'Ange EUR 20, C-Hotels Andromeda EUR 22, and ABC Hotel, Beach Hotel De Haan, Beach Palace and Bütgenbacher Hof EUR 25, with ABC at EUR 30 for a large dog. Britannia is EUR 40 per dog per night and Manoir de Lébioles EUR 49.

Which hotels on the Belgian coast let dogs into breakfast or the restaurant?+

Hotel Britannia in Knokke takes dogs in both the breakfast room and the restaurant. Casino Hotel in Koksijde takes them in the breakfast room. Hotel Atlanta Knokke allows dogs in the restaurant on the lead and under the table, not at the buffet. C-Hotels Andromeda in Ostend doesn't allow dogs in the breakfast area, and ABC Hotel, Beach Palace and Beach Hotel De Haan publish no rule, so ask when you book.

Where should I stay with a big dog on the Belgian coast or in the Ardennes?+

No hotel on this list publishes a weight limit, so size is a question to put to the hotel before you book. ABC Hotel in Blankenberge is the only one that prices a large dog, at EUR 30 a night against EUR 25 for a small one, though it doesn't say where the line sits. On the Ardennes side Maison Pal'Ange near Durbuy takes up to two dogs per room with no weight limit stated. At La Réserve Resort only small dogs are allowed in the bar.

Where can dogs be off the lead on the Belgian coast all year?+

In Knokke-Heist, on the stretch at Het Zoute from east of Surfers Paradise to the Dutch border. In Blankenberge, in Zone 1 from the Westerstaketsel to the De Haan border. At Zeebrugge, in the green zone from the end of the dike to the Blankenberge border, which is off-lead in summer and winter. Zeebrugge's red zone by the dike is different: from 15 March to 15 October dogs are only allowed there before 10:00 and after 20:00 on the lead, and in winter it's on-lead.

Can dogs go on the beach at De Panne?+

De Panne has four zones. Zone 1, from Canadezenplein towards Koksijde, and Zone 3, from De Rampe to the sand-yacht centre, are on-lead all year. Zone 2, the central beach between Canadezenplein and De Rampe, is closed to dogs from 15 June to 15 September and on-lead otherwise. Zone 4, from the sand-yacht centre towards France, is off-lead from 16 September to 14 June, and in summer it's off-lead between 18:30 and 10:30 and on-lead during the day.

Can dogs go on the beach at Nieuwpoort?+

Yes, on the lead, which is required on the beach all year. From 15 June to 15 September dogs are only allowed before 10:30 and after 18:30, and from 16 September to 14 June they're welcome all day. There are two fenced off-lead areas, one by the harbour channel at Prins Mauritspark and one in Leopold II Park.

Which hotels on the Belgian coast and in the Ardennes don't take dogs?+

Leopold Hotel Ostend doesn't allow pets and takes service animals only. The C-Hotels group doesn't take dogs at Burlington in Ostend, Silt in Middelkerke or Helios in Blankenberge, while its Andromeda in Ostend does at EUR 22 per dog per night. My Hotel in Malmedy states in its terms that pets aren't allowed. Elsewhere in the Ardennes many four and five-star hotels publish no dog policy, so ask for a yes in writing.

Can I take my dog into the Zwin Nature Park?+

No. Dogs aren't allowed in the Zwin Nature Park at Knokke-Heist, guide dogs excepted, there's nowhere to leave a dog and the park asks you not to leave one in the car. That applies to the ticketed nature park only. The public beach follows the Knokke-Heist beach rule, including the off-lead stretch at Het Zoute that runs to the Dutch border.

Can I take my dog on the Eurostar to Belgium?+

Not from London. Eurostar doesn't take pets on trains to and from London, between Brussels or the Netherlands and Lille, or on its Sun and Snow routes. On its other routes between Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands, animals under 6 kg travel free in a carrier of at most 45 x 30 x 25 cm, and larger dogs need the dog fare of EUR 30 and must be on a lead and muzzled. Guide and assistance dogs travel free.
