Best Pet-Friendly Hotels in New York

United States

116 dog-friendly luxury hotels.

Where can my dog actually go?

New York is the most dog-friendly big city we've researched anywhere, and it isn't close. We put 132 Manhattan hotels through our booking partner and 116 take dogs. Most of the refusals are small boutiques with a service-animals-only line. What's remarkable is how many take dogs free and at any size. The Plaza runs Fairmont's Canine Companions programme at no charge with an in-room dog menu. Soho Grand and the Roxy take two dogs of any size free and share a private fenced dog park on West Broadway. Kimpton Era and Kimpton Eventi apply the full Kimpton policy, no fee, no limit. The three Firmdales, Crosby Street, Whitby and Warren Street, are free with gourmet treats. The Greenwich, the Mercer, Nine Orchard, the Sherry-Netherland, the Maritime, the Standard High Line and the Hotel Chelsea are all free too.

The luxury tier competes on dog service rather than tolerance. The Mark has a Jean-Georges Spoiled Dog's Menu and a play tent in the room. The Carlyle and the Lowell provide dog-walking. The Waldorf Astoria's Bark Avenue package includes a dog bathrobe, raincoat and boots. Park Hyatt, Four Seasons Midtown, Sofitel and Loews Regency all publish a dog room-service menu. Baccarat, Peninsula and Four Seasons Downtown send up beds, bowls and welcome kits. Fees at this level run USD 150 to USD 375 per stay and most of them cap the dog at 25 lb, so check the weight column before the fee.

The city itself is easier than its reputation. NYC parks allow dogs off-leash in designated areas from opening until 9am and from 9pm until close, and the fenced runs at Madison Square, Tompkins Square, Washington Square, Chelsea Waterside and Central Park work all day. Two rules catch people out: the High Line does not allow dogs at all, and on the subway the dog must be fully enclosed in a carrier. Manhattan hotels won't let the dog into the restaurant, but a surprising number welcome it in the lobby and bar.

Before you go

What happens when you get there

Park hours
In designated off-leash areas, dogs may run free from park opening until 9am and from 9pm until closing. Between 9am and 9pm they must be on a lead of six feet or less everywhere except inside a fenced dog run. Central Park, Riverside Park, Madison Square, Tompkins Square, Washington Square and Chelsea Waterside all have runs. Bryant Park allows dogs on the paths but not the lawn.
The High Line and the subway
The High Line does not allow dogs, only service animals, because dog urine damages the plantings. On the subway the dog must be fully enclosed in a carrier or bag, with no size limit on the bag. Taxis and rideshares are at the driver's discretion.
Free and any size
Soho Grand, Roxy, Kimpton Era, Kimpton Eventi, the Greenwich, the Mercer, Nine Orchard, the Sherry-Netherland, the Maritime and the Plaza take dogs of any size at no charge. The Standard High Line, Hotel Chelsea, Crosby Street, Whitby, Warren Street, Fouquet's, Refinery, 1 Hotel, Hotel 50 Bowery, the Marlton, the Bowery Hotel and the Waldorf Astoria are free with a weight cap.
Leaving the dog
The Dominick, Knickerbocker, Carlyle, Crosby Street, Soho Grand, Roxy, Park Hyatt, Four Seasons Downtown, Times Square EDITION, New York EDITION, ModernHaus, Smyth, Sherry-Netherland, Lombardy, Renwick, Nolitan, Ace and Hotel 50 Bowery allow a well-behaved dog alone in the room. Most of the grand hotels, including the Plaza, Peninsula, Aman, Mandarin Oriental, Baccarat, Lotte Palace and the Firmdales' Whitby, don't. Many hotels can arrange a walker or sitter.
Weight limits
No limit at Soho Grand, Roxy, Plaza, Kimpton Era, Kimpton Eventi, Greenwich, Mercer, Nine Orchard, Sherry-Netherland, Maritime, Wall Street Hotel, Standard East Village, Le Méridien Central Park, Virgin, Gansevoort, Lowell, Grayson, Wallace, AKA Central Park and Martinique. 75 lb at The London and Freehand. 60 to 65 lb at the Ned, Pendry, Ritz-Carlton NoMad, Smyth, Waldorf Astoria and High Line Hotel. 50 lb at Barclay, Fifth Avenue Hotel, Andaz, Aman, Park Hyatt and the Chatwal. 25 lb or under at most of the Fifth Avenue and Central Park South palaces.
Restaurants and bars
No hotel restaurant in Manhattan admits pet dogs indoors. The Mark, the Manner and the Standard East Village seat dogs on outdoor patios. Soho Grand, Roxy, Wall Street Hotel, Times Square EDITION and the Marlton welcome dogs in the bar. The Plaza, Carlyle, Beekman, Greenwich, Loews Regency, Kimpton Era and around thirty others welcome dogs in the lobby.
Best walks
Central Park's bridle path and the Ramble at dawn, the Hudson River Park esplanade from Battery Park to Chelsea Piers, Riverside Park's 72nd Street dog run, Washington Square Park, Tompkins Square Park's dog run, and the East River Esplanade below the Brooklyn Bridge.
When to go
April to June and September to November. Summer pavement is hot and humid, winter sidewalks are salted, so pack booties or a balm for either.

Most charge a refundable damage deposit or a signed waiver instead.

Which New York hotel has a dog park?+

Soho Grand has a private fenced dog park for guests, with water bowls and a fire hydrant, and the Roxy shares it. The High Line Hotel has a large private garden courtyard. The Wall Street Hotel publishes an off-leash area on the property. The Standard East Village has a heated garden where dogs can sit with you.

Can dogs go off-leash in Central Park?+

Yes, in designated areas from 6am to 9am and from 9pm to 1am, with proof of rabies vaccination and a licence. Between 9am and 9pm dogs must be leashed. The Plaza, Ritz-Carlton Central Park, Park Lane, Essex House, Mandarin Oriental, 1 Hotel and the Pierre are all across the street from it.

Are dogs allowed on the High Line?+

No. The High Line allows service animals only, because the planking directs rainwater into the planting beds and dog urine would damage them. Hotels beside it, the Standard High Line, Gansevoort, Faena, Equinox and Maritime, all point guests to Hudson River Park instead.

Can I take my dog on the New York subway?+

Only in a carrier. MTA rules require any animal to be fully enclosed in a container and carried so it doesn't bother other passengers. There's no size limit on the bag, so large soft carriers and tote bags are common. Service animals are exempt.

Soho Grand and Roxy (crated), the Dominick with a Do Not Disturb sign, the Knickerbocker, Carlyle, Crosby Street, Park Hyatt, Four Seasons Downtown, both EDITIONs, ModernHaus, Smyth, Sherry-Netherland, Lombardy, Renwick, Nolitan, Ace, Hotel 50 Bowery, Refinery and W Times Square. Do the Kimpton hotels in New York charge for dogs?+

Kimpton Era Midtown and Kimpton Hotel Eventi follow the brand policy: no fee, no deposit, no size or breed limit. Ink 48 is the exception, a Kimpton that publishes a 50 lb cap and a USD 150 fee, so don't assume the brand rule there.

Which New York hotels have a dog menu?+

The Plaza, The Mark (by Jean-Georges), Park Hyatt, Four Seasons Midtown (Paws and Plates), Sofitel, Loews Regency, the Lowell, the Pierre and the Waldorf Astoria's Bark Avenue package all publish in-room dining for dogs.

Is the Plaza dog friendly?+

Yes, and it takes dogs free at any size under Fairmont's Canine Companions programme, with a bed, bowls and a dog dining menu in the room. Dogs aren't allowed in the Palm Court or Champagne Bar and can't be left alone, though the hotel arranges sitters. Central Park is across Fifth Avenue.
