The Sporades are harder work for a dog than most of Greece. Of thirty hotels across Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos where a pets rule could be read, twenty say no, and the refusals include most of the big names: Kassandra Bay, Bourtzi, Mandraki Village, KB Ammos, Skiathos Avaton, Skiathos Thalassa, both Adrinas on Skopelos, Skopelos Village and Alonissos Beach Bungalows. Three hotels on our list take dogs with published terms, and all three belong to the Santikos Collection: the Princess Resort on Agia Paraskevi beach and Aegean Suites at Megali Ammos on Skiathos, and the Marpunta Resort on its own peninsula on Alonissos. Skopelos has nothing that passes.
Because all three run the same group policy, where the dog can go is identical at each: the room, and the grounds and public areas on a lead or in a carrier. Dogs aren't in the restaurants, the bars or the pool areas, so at the Princess Resort breakfast at Basilico and dinner at Ammos are without the dog, at Aegean Suites the Pelagos restaurant and Karavia pool bar are off limits, and at Marpunta the Sunset restaurant, Achinos beach restaurant and both bars are too. Marpunta frames this as Greek health and safety rules, and most hotels in the islands will say the same, so plan to eat on open terraces in town. The dog can't be left alone in the room at any of the three. What separates them is the setting. The Princess Resort sits on the sand at Agia Paraskevi with the bus along the south coast road stopping outside. Aegean Suites is adults only, 16 and over, across the road from Megali Ammos beach and a kilometre from Skiathos town. Marpunta is pine shade and sea on three sides inside the Alonissos marine park, with the best walking in the Sporades on its doorstep. Whether the dog can go on the beach in front of each hotel isn't published, so ask.
The fee is EUR 25 per pet per night at all three, non-refundable, with one dog per room and no published weight limit, which means a big dog is as welcome as a small one on paper at any of them. Aegean Suites also shows the fee as EUR 25 per room for the whole stay in one place and per night in another, so confirm which applies when you book.
The islands shut for winter. Every island hotel checked lists its pool as seasonal and the hotels themselves are largely closed from November to April. Getting there matters too. Skiathos has the only airport in the Sporades, three kilometres from Megali Ammos, and the ferries have firm rules: a dog over 10 kg travels on the open deck or in the ship's animal area on the conventional boats from Volos or Agios Konstantinos, and on the fast ferries only animals up to 10 kg in a carrier are allowed at all.

Before you go
What happens when you get there
- Ferries
- On Hellenic Seaways pets travel in dedicated PET cabins, maximum two pets, or in the ship's animal area, never in ordinary cabins, bars, restaurants or indoor areas. Fast ferries take only small animals up to 10 kg in a carrier. Lead and muzzle are mandatory when moving about, and the dog needs its own zero-fare ticket issued before boarding with its passport and microchip number. Seajets' terms match: free ticket declared at booking, muzzled on open decks, under 10 kg in a basket if you book a whole private cabin. ANES Ferries from Volos publishes no pet page, so ask at the ticket desk.
- Airport
- Skiathos is the only airport in the Sporades, about 3 km from Megali Ammos and Skiathos town, so the last leg with a dog is short. Airline cabin rules weren't checked for this page, so confirm your carrier's policy for the route before you book.
- Hotel restaurants
- None of the three hotels allows dogs in its restaurants, bars or pool areas, and Marpunta puts this down to Greek health and safety regulations, which is how most Sporades hotels frame it. Expect to eat on open terraces in Skiathos town or Patitiri with the dog rather than at the hotel.
- One dog, never alone
- All three hotels take a maximum of one pet per room, want it fully trained and well behaved, on a lead or in a carrier in public areas, and won't have it left unattended in the room or in a vehicle. Guests pay for any damage. No weight limit is published at any of them.
- Fees
- EUR 25 per pet per night, non-refundable, at the Princess Resort, Aegean Suites and Marpunta. Aegean Suites also appears as EUR 25 per room for the whole stay in one listing, so ask which is current. Guide dogs are a separate case on the ferries, where they're allowed everywhere.
- Skopelos
- Nothing on Skopelos made the list. The Adrina Beach, Adrina Resort & Spa, Skopelos Village, Thea Home, Panormos Beach, Aperitton and Stafylos Suites all list pets as not allowed, and Natura shows as closed from 16 October to 30 April with conflicting pet rules. If Skopelos is the plan, base on Skiathos or Alonissos and day-trip.
- Alonissos marine park
- Marpunta sits inside the National Marine Park, so a dog can clearly stay within the park boundary. The park's own rules for dogs couldn't be read, and boat-trip operators set their own, so ask before booking a day on the water. From Patitiri the old path climbs to Chora in roughly 45 minutes and the island has a dense network of marked trails through pine and olive.
- Seasonal closures
- Every island hotel checked lists its outdoor pool as seasonal, and the islands are largely shut from November to April. Confirm opening dates with the hotel for anything outside June to September.
- Best walks
- On Skiathos, the Strofilia wetland pine forest behind Koukounaries beach, one of the flattest walks on the island, the coast path from Megali Ammos into Skiathos town and out to the Bourtzi headland, and the coast road from Agia Paraskevi west to Platanias. On Alonissos, the resort's own coves on the Marpunta peninsula, the old path from Patitiri up to Chora in about 45 minutes, and the island's marked trail network through pine and olive, which is the best dog walking in the Sporades.
- When to go
- June to September, when the hotels and their pools are open and the ferries run at full strength. May and October are quieter and better for the Alonissos trails, but check the hotel is open before you book, because the islands are largely closed from November to April. Beach rules for dogs in high season weren't checked for this page, so ask locally rather than assuming.

Questions we get asked
Dogs in Skiathos and the Sporades
Is Skiathos dog friendly?+
Less than most Greek islands. Two thirds of the hotels where a rule could be read refuse dogs, including Kassandra Bay, Bourtzi, Mandraki Village, KB Ammos, Skiathos Avaton and Skiathos Thalassa. The two Skiathos hotels that do take dogs with published terms, the Princess Resort and Aegean Suites, keep them out of the restaurants, bars and pool areas, so it's a room-and-grounds welcome rather than a seat at dinner.
Which Skiathos hotels take dogs?+
The Princess Resort on Agia Paraskevi beach and Aegean Suites at Megali Ammos, both Santikos Collection, both one dog per room at EUR 25 per pet per night. On Alonissos the Marpunta Resort, also Santikos, runs the same policy.
How much do Skiathos hotels charge for dogs?+
EUR 25 per pet per night, non-refundable, at the Princess Resort, Aegean Suites and Marpunta. Aegean Suites also shows as EUR 25 per room for the whole stay in one listing, so confirm which applies before you book.
Where should I stay in the Sporades with a big dog?+
None of the three hotels publishes a weight limit, so the Princess Resort, Aegean Suites and Marpunta are all open to a big dog on paper, one per room. The ferry is the bigger issue: a dog over 10 kg can't use the fast ferries and travels on the open deck or in the animal area on the conventional boats, so pack a muzzle and water, or fly into Skiathos.
Can my dog come to breakfast or dinner at the hotel?+
No. All three hotels keep dogs out of their restaurants, bars and pool areas. At the Princess Resort that means Basilico and Ammos, at Aegean Suites the Pelagos restaurant and Karavia pool bar, and at Marpunta the Sunset and Achinos restaurants and both bars. Eat on the open terraces in town with the dog instead.
Can I take my dog on the ferry to Skiathos?+
Yes, with rules. On Hellenic Seaways the dog travels in a dedicated PET cabin or the ship's animal area, needs a zero-fare ticket issued before boarding with its passport and microchip number, and wears a muzzle and lead when moving about. Fast ferries only carry animals up to 10 kg in a carrier. Seajets runs similar terms, and ANES from Volos publishes none, so ask at the desk.
Are there dog friendly hotels on Skopelos?+
None with published terms that we can recommend. The island's three strongest hotels, Adrina Beach, Adrina Resort & Spa and Skopelos Village, all refuse dogs, and so do Thea Home, Panormos Beach, Aperitton and Stafylos Suites. Stay on Skiathos or Alonissos and visit for the day.
Is Alonissos good for dogs?+
For walking, it's the best of the Sporades, with a marked trail network through pine and olive and the old path from Patitiri up to Chora. Marpunta Resort takes one dog per room at EUR 25 a night, in the room and grounds but not the restaurants, bars or pool. The marine park's own dog rules and the boat operators' rules weren't available, so ask before a boat day.
