Where can my dog actually go?

Tenerife is a harder island for a dog than its size suggests, and that is the finding rather than a complaint. We looked at 78 properties across Costa Adeje, Playa de las Americas, Los Cristianos, Santa Cruz, La Laguna, Puerto de la Cruz and the north, and 12 came through. Nearly every four-star and above on the island either says nothing about dogs or says assistance dogs only, and where a yes does exist it is usually capped at five to ten kilos. The reason to come anyway is the weather, because Tenerife sits at 20 to 24 degrees through January and February and there are very few places in Europe where a winter holiday with a dog works without cold, rain or a ferry.

What separates the twelve is where the dog is actually allowed to be, and only three hotels on the island answer that properly. GF Isabel at Playa de Fanabe has a fenced dog run called Pets Land, lets a dog join you in the restaurant, on the bar terraces and at the pool bar, and caps it at three dogs per area booked at reception. Hotel Botanico in Puerto de la Cruz goes restaurant by restaurant and names the exact section a dog may sit in, down to the gallery of the Parrilla and the right-hand side of the Oriental. Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife publishes its whole policy as a document in English, including a named list of where the dog can't go and a written one-hour limit on leaving it in the room. Catalonia Las Vegas is clear the other way, dogs stay out of the restaurant, the bar and the pool, which is worth knowing before you book rather than after.

Fees run from EUR 10 a day at La Quinta Roja in Garachico and EUR 12 at Hotel Vallemar and Laguna Nivaria, through EUR 22 at Catalonia Las Vegas and EUR 25 at NH Tenerife, up to EUR 30 to EUR 40 a day for GF Isabel's Basic and Premium packs and EUR 40 a night at Hard Rock with EUR 20 for a second dog. Botanico is EUR 35 a night plus a EUR 60 cleaning fee. The weight caps matter more than the money. Vallemar and Laguna Nivaria stop at 5 kg, Botanico at 8 kg, Hard Rock at 10 kg, Catalonia Las Vegas at 20 kg. NH Tenerife in Santa Cruz publishes 25 kg for up to two dogs and is the only published policy on the island that fits a spaniel or a collie. La Quinta Roja publishes no weight limit at all for one dog, which makes the north the answer for a big dog rather than the south.

The refusals are worth naming because they cover most of what you would otherwise shortlist. The Ritz-Carlton Abama states pets not allowed. Iberostar, Adrian, H10, Riu, Vincci, Spring and the Mare Nostrum properties all say no across their Tenerife estates, and Barcelo's group pet list has no Tenerife hotel on it at all, which rules out the three Royal Hideaway Corales properties in Costa Adeje. GF is a no across the group apart from GF Isabel. Two other things to plan around. The Teide cable car does not carry pet dogs, only guide and therapy dogs, so the island's best-known day out is off the list. And Tenerife has no signposted network of dog beaches that we could confirm from an official source, so we are not going to name you one.

    The clearest written policy in the Canaries, with a named list of where the dog can and can't go, restaurant access limited rather than open, no dogs at breakfast and a one-hour limit on leaving the dog in the room. What happens when you get there

Weight limits
This is the real gate on Tenerife, not the fee. Hotel Vallemar and Laguna Nivaria stop at 5 kg, Hotel Botanico at 8 kg, Hard Rock at 10 kg and Catalonia Las Vegas at 20 kg. NH Tenerife publishes 25 kg for two dogs and La Quinta Roja in Garachico publishes no limit for one, and between them they are most of the medium and large dog map.
Fees
EUR 10 a day at La Quinta Roja, EUR 12 at Hotel Vallemar and Laguna Nivaria, EUR 22 plus a EUR 200 deposit at Catalonia Las Vegas, EUR 25 a night at NH Tenerife. GF Isabel charges EUR 30 a day for the Basic pack and EUR 40 for the Premium. Hard Rock is EUR 40 a night with EUR 20 for a second dog, and Hotel Botanico is EUR 35 a night plus a EUR 60 cleaning fee for the stay. Melia and Tivoli add the dog as a booking extra and don't publish the figure, so check it at that step.
Black sand and paws
Most of the island's beaches are volcanic black sand, including Playa Jardin in Puerto de la Cruz and the wild northern beaches, and black sand holds far more heat than the imported golden sand at Playa del Duque or Las Teresitas. On a still day in the south it is unwalkable for a dog long before the air feels hot. Walk early or after five, and test it with the back of your hand before the dog leaves the path.
Teide cable car
A pet dog cannot go up. The cable car's published access rules bar anyone travelling with animals, and the exception is written for guide and therapy dogs only. The park's own trail rules could not be confirmed from an official source, so don't assume the walking routes follow the same rule either way. Ask the Cabildo before you plan a day around it.
Buses
TITSA publishes a usable rule. Dogs under 10 kg travel in a carrier no bigger than 60 by 35 by 35 cm, one per person. Dogs over 10 kg travel one per accessible vehicle with a fitted space, on a lead under 50 cm and muzzled, and they are barred from 7am to 9am, from 1pm to 3pm on weekdays and whenever the bus is full. Assistance dogs travel anywhere on the fleet at any time.
Getting there and island hopping
Tenerife South, TFS, takes almost all the international traffic and sits 20 to 30 minutes from Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos, while Tenerife North, TFN, serves Santa Cruz, La Laguna and Puerto de la Cruz. The Canaries are Spanish territory so the EU pet rules apply on arrival, and the real constraint is which airline will take your dog in the cabin rather than the island itself. For the other islands, Fred. Olsen Express publishes Pet Carrier from EUR 2 for dogs up to 10 kg, Pet Rooms from EUR 3 on shaded ventilated terraces with video monitoring you can visit mid-crossing, and Pet Sofa from EUR 7, which is a mat beside you at any weight.
Dog beaches
Tenerife has no signposted dog beach network that we could confirm, and no municipal or tourism-board designation stood up in this pass, so we are not naming one. The tourism board's own page for Playa de las Gaviotas in Santa Cruz lists dogs as not allowed. Ask your hotel where the local rule actually stands before you set out.
Vets
We could not verify a 24-hour veterinary hospital on Tenerife from a working official source, so we are not going to name one to you. Ask reception for the nearest emergency clinic and its out-of-hours number on the day you arrive, and put it in your phone before you need it.
Best walks
The north is where a dog walk works on this island, because the laurel forest is shaded and cool while the south is not. Parque Taoro above Puerto de la Cruz drops through terraces and shaded paths into town, and the Avenida de Colon promenade runs the seafront past Playa Martianez. In Santa Cruz, Parque Garcia Sanabria is the big shaded city park. Garachico gives you El Caleton's volcanic rock pools, the harbour promenade and the old Camino Real climbing towards the Mirador de Garachico and the Teno hills. In the south the Costa Adeje seafront promenade runs unbroken from Playa de Fanabe past Playa del Duque to the fishing village at La Caleta, and the cliff path at Playa Paraiso goes north towards Callao Salvaje and south over the headland above Playa de Ajabo.
When to go
October to May, and January and February in particular. The island holds 20 to 24 degrees through the deep winter, which is the whole reason to bring a dog here rather than anywhere else in Europe at that time of year. July and August are the opposite case. The same year-round warmth that makes winter work turns the black sand and the southern resorts into a welfare problem, and a dog is better off at home than on a lounger in Costa Adeje in August.

Is Tenerife dog friendly?+

Less than you would expect. Of 78 four-star-and-above properties we looked at, 12 take dogs, and most of those cap at five to ten kilos. The island is excellent for a dog in winter because of the weather and the north's shaded laurel forest walks, but the hotel supply is thin and the Teide cable car is closed to pet dogs, so it needs planning rather than booking on spec.

Where should I stay in Tenerife with a big dog?+

NH Tenerife in Santa Cruz publishes 25 kg for up to two dogs at EUR 25 a night, and it is the only published policy on the island that fits a spaniel or a collie. La Quinta Roja in Garachico takes one dog at EUR 10 a day with no weight limit. Everything else in the south stops at 20 kg or lower, so a big dog means the north or the capital rather than Costa Adeje.

How much do Tenerife hotels charge for dogs?+

Can dogs go up the Teide cable car?+

No. The cable car's published access rules bar travelling with animals and the written exception covers guide and therapy dogs only, so a pet dog cannot go up. The trail rules inside Teide National Park are a separate question and we could not confirm them from an official source, so ring the park before you build a day around walking up there.

Which Tenerife hotels let dogs into the restaurant?+

GF Isabel at Playa de Fanabe is the clearest, with a dog allowed in the restaurant, on the bar terraces and at the pool bar, three dogs per area, booked at reception. Hotel Botanico names the exact section of each restaurant a dog may sit in. Hard Rock allows limited restaurant access but no dogs at breakfast, and Catalonia Las Vegas keeps dogs out of the restaurant, the bar and the pool entirely.

Are there dog beaches in Tenerife?+

None that we could confirm from an official source. Tenerife has no signposted dog beach network, no municipal or tourism-board designation stood up when we checked, and the tourism board's own page for Playa de las Gaviotas in Santa Cruz lists dogs as not allowed. Ask locally rather than trusting a list, and remember the black sand gets dangerously hot regardless.

Do luxury hotels in Tenerife take dogs?+

Almost none do. When is the best time to visit Tenerife with a dog?+

October to May, with January and February the standout because the island stays at 20 to 24 degrees when the rest of Europe doesn't. Avoid July and August. The heat that makes winter here work is a real welfare problem in high summer, especially on the black sand and in the southern resorts where there is very little shade.
