Domes Aulus Elounda, Curio Collection by Hilton, Crete

The best welcome of Daisy's travelling career: a staff meeting held in her honour, her own welcome letter, and the best view of the entire trip.

Daisy's Verdict
Would Daisy stay again? Yes, without hesitation.
9 out of 10, and very much Daisy Approved. The missing point is for the all inclusive dinners, and even that is more about who I am than what they do. Everything else was remarkable. The best welcome of Daisy's travelling career, a staff meeting held in her honour, her own welcome letter, a junior suite with a plunge pool and the best view of the entire trip, a calm beach where she floated her way to local fame, and a team, led by Tamara, who made every single day easy.

Overall recommendation

Book Meze, the à la carte restaurant, for early in your stay before it fills up. Get to the beach by nine or wait for the one o'clock turnover. And three nights was the right length to enjoy the resort and still do Elounda and Plaka properly.

Best suited for

Couples and friend trips with a small dog, first of all. If you love a true all inclusive, where you settle in, never open your wallet and never leave the grounds, you will be in heaven here. If you are like us, and the words set menu make you reach for the car keys, treat it as a gorgeous base with breakfast, drinks and snacks included, and spend your evenings in the tavernas. Both versions work. Just know which one you are before you book.

One thing to know before booking

The mountain is the thing to understand before you book. The resort is steep. Properly steep. You are reliant on the golf buggies and cars to get to and from your room, and they run whenever you call, but walking up is simply not happening. Triple check your room number on day one, it is dark up there at night.

Favourite moment

Daisy's big moment at the beach. I brought her floaty down and took her out on the water, little shark fin bobbing along, and the entire beach was in stitches. People were filming us. I am fairly sure Daisy in her floaty was the beach entertainment that morning, and she absolutely knew it.

The hotel

A staff meeting. About a Shih Tzu.

Daisy has had some epic welcomes over the years. Champagne with her name on the card, squeaky toys presented at reception, staff who learned her name before mine. Domes Aulus Elounda beat all of them, and it did it before we even arrived. During check-in they told us, quite casually, that the team had held a meeting that morning to talk about Daisy's arrival. Never have I felt so looked after within the first ten minutes of a stay. The message was clear. We are here to give you the best experience possible, and the small fluffy one is the VIP.

We booked a Sea View Sapphire Nest, and the upgrade landed us in the Sapphire Zen Suite with private pool. You walk in and the bed sits in the centre of the room facing a full wall of glass patio doors. Outside, an L shaped plunge pool, two deck chairs, a proper seating area and two sun loungers. The room looks straight out over Elounda Bay, and no photo or video we took does it justice. Sunrise, sunset, and every hour in between, it was the view of the trip. Daisy had her own welcome letter, a bandana, a leash and her bowls, and the next day a dog bed was delivered to the room.

What we noticed
Arrival

The team had held a staff meeting that morning to talk about Daisy's arrival. The restaurant manager, guest relations, concierge and the golf cart drivers all came to greet her, bags and keys were taken over at the door, and Tamara made check-in silky smooth, plus a room upgrade and a chicken sandwich from Meze because we had missed lunch.

The room

Daisy had her own welcome letter, in a big envelope, addressed to her. Waiting in the Sapphire Zen Suite were a bandana, a leash and her bowls, and the next day a dog bed was delivered to the room while we were out. For the humans: sparkling rosé with fresh fruit and macarons, red wine, Turkish delight, and a fridge full of soft drinks.

Daisy's Note

We booked a Sea View Sapphire Nest and were upgraded to the Sapphire Zen Suite with private pool. If you have a hire car, ask about parking near your room when you book.

Worth knowing

The resort is built into the side of a mountain and it is properly steep, you rely on the golf buggies to get to and from your room, and it is dark up there at night, so triple check your room number. Dogs are not at the pools themselves (typical tiled decks), and Elounda town is a taxi ride or a 35 minute walk away.

Walkability

Golf carts run whenever you call, and we got lucky with a parking space right by our room. The small, calm beach on the shallow bay was Daisy's playground, she swam in her shark fin floaty and became the beach entertainment. Breakfast on the terrace, and every meal, with us.

Daisy's Note

They knew Daisy was coming, they prepared for her like a celebrity guest, and every single person we passed treated her like the reason the resort existed that week.

Daisy was welcome at breakfast on the terrace and could dine with us everywhere we ate. The pools are typical tiled decks and dogs are not allowed at them, so she chilled on our bed or our own loungers during pool time and got the beach instead, and she did not file a complaint.
