Where can my dog actually go?

Dallas takes dogs more readily than almost any city we've researched. Of 32 hotels through our booking partner, 26 say yes, and only the convention boxes and a couple of old-money holdouts refuse. The two luxury benchmarks are the Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek, which puts a bed, bowls and a personalised blanket in the room and opens onto the Turtle Creek Parkway trails, and Hotel Crescent Court, whose Crescent Canines package covers the fee and sends you home with a bandana and a groomer visit. For a big dog or a tight budget, the Kimpton Pittman in Deep Ellum runs the full Kimpton policy: no fee, no size limit, a bark park a block away.

Free is common here. The Thompson takes two dogs to 50 lb free and has a ninth-floor relief area so you never do the lobby-and-street trek at dawn. Virgin takes any size free with a bed and a bandana. The Westin Galleria takes two free. Fees elsewhere run USD 75 to USD 175 per stay, almost never per night. The catch across the city is that most hotels won't let the dog stay alone in the room. The ones that will: Adolphus, Crescent Court, W Dallas, Omni, Hyatt Regency, Westin Park Central, and the Highland and Westin Galleria if the dog is crated.

Dallas is a driving city with a hot, humid summer, and highs sit near 100°F from June to September. The walks that matter are the Katy Trail, a shaded former rail line running through Uptown that the Crescent, Ritz-Carlton, W and the Highland all touch, Klyde Warren Park with its own dog park in the Arts District, and the Turtle Creek greenbelt below the Mansion. Deep Ellum has Bark Park Central for off-leash time. Everything downtown relies on Main Street Garden, which has a dog run.

Leaving the dog
Most Dallas hotels require the dog to be with you. Adolphus, Crescent Court, W Dallas, Omni, Hyatt Regency Dallas and Westin Park Central allow a crated or well-behaved dog alone in the room. Kimpton Pittman, Thompson, Virgin, Rosewood, Swexan and Fairmont don't. Plan dinner around it.

The walks
The Katy Trail is the best urban dog walk in Texas, shaded and paved, with Uptown hotels at its side. Klyde Warren Park in the Arts District has a fenced dog park. Turtle Creek Parkway runs below the Rosewood Mansion. Bark Park Central and Barry Annino Bark Park are the Deep Ellum off-leash runs. Main Street Garden downtown has a dog run.
The heat
June to September highs near 100°F with humidity, and pavement burns paws by late morning. Walk at dawn and after dark, stay on the shaded trails, and use hotel relief areas in between. October to May is the season.
Restaurants
Texas allows dogs on restaurant patios where the restaurant opts in, and Uptown and Deep Ellum patios often do. No hotel on this list publishes dogs in its dining rooms. Fairmont and Hyatt Regency keep them out explicitly.
Flying in
DFW has pet relief areas inside security in every terminal, near A29, B28, D18 and E31. The in-terminal Grand Hyatt doesn't take pets. The Hyatt Regency by Terminal C does, with grass on site, and the Skylink train and shuttle connect it to the terminals.
Best walks
The Katy Trail from Victory Park to Knox Street, Klyde Warren Park and the Arts District, Turtle Creek Parkway below the Mansion, White Rock Lake's nine-mile loop, and the Trinity Strand Trail through the Design District.
When to go
October to May. Spring and autumn are the sweet spot, with the Katy Trail in leaf and the patios open. Summer is for early mornings only.

The Hyatt Regency DFW beside Terminal C takes one dog with grass on site, USD 75 per stay. The Grand Hyatt inside Terminal D doesn't take pets. DFW has pet relief areas inside security in every terminal.
