What happens when you get there

Beaches

Unorganised sand and the sea are open to her under law 4830/2021, on a lead whenever she's out of the water. On Kefalonia that's Emplisi, Foki and Dafnoudi around Fiskardo, Alaties, the Agia Efimia town beach, Petani and Xi on the Lixouri peninsula, Kato Lagadi and Paliostafida. On Zakynthos it's Argassi, Porto Roma on the east of the Vassilikos peninsula, Cape Krioneri north of town, Xigia and Makris Gialos near Volimes, and the west coast rock inlets at Porto Limnionas, Porto Vromi and Korakonissi. Where one of those has a sunbed concession the operator's posted sign decides it, and the other thing to check is whether your hotel's own frontage is a certified section, because Blue Flag certification carries a no-dogs condition: Kefalonia has thirteen of those in 2026, including Myrtos, Antisamos, Makrys Gialos, Platys Gialos, Lourdas, Ammes, Avythos, Ai Chelis and both Skala beaches, and Zakynthos twelve, including Tsilivi, Kalamaki, Gerakas, Banana, Alykes, Alykanas, Amboula at Tragaki, Limni Keriou and Psarou.

The National Marine Park of Zakynthos

The park covers the south of the island and Laganas bay and protects the Mediterranean's most important loggerhead nesting ground. Its own protection measures say cars, motorbikes, bicycles, horses and dogs are not allowed on nesting beaches as they may present a hazard. That's Gerakas, Dafni, Sekania, Kalamaki, Marathonisi and Laganas, with Sekania closed to the public altogether. The rest of the code: the beaches are open 07:00 to sunset only, activity stays within about five metres of the water, caged nests are left alone, and umbrellas aren't allowed at all on Gerakas, Dafni or Marathonisi. This is conservation, not a hotel rule, and the beaches are better for it. The park is on +30 26950 29870 and info@nmp-zak.org, with an information centre at Gerakas.

Nesting on Kefalonia too

Fewer people know Kefalonia has loggerhead nesting as well. Mounda bay and Kaminia in the south-east near Skala are the island's main nesting sands, and Wildlife Sense works on beaches including Megas Lakkos and Ai Chelis. Ai Chelis is one of the certified sections, so dogs aren't on that sand in any case. No published dog rule was found for the Kefalonia nesting beaches, so treat that as unknown and ask locally before you walk her on one.

The Zakynthos night-flight curfew

Because of the turtles, flights can't take off or land at Zakynthos between 22:00 and 05:00. That rules out the late-evening arrival slots that suit a dog in summer and means you'll almost always land in daylight heat. Plan the transfer accordingly, with water and a cool car, and know that the airport is only five kilometres from town.

Ferries

Levante Ferries runs Kyllini to Zakynthos, Kyllini to Poros and Patras to Sami on Kefalonia, and Argostoli to Lixouri runs all year. None of the operators publishes a pet page, so the rule is the law. Large dogs are banned from enclosed passenger lounges and enclosed vehicle decks, ships carry one cage per 200 passengers on open decks, and a dog moves about the passenger decks on a lead with her owner. Small pets travel in a carrier anywhere with the captain's agreement. Book a pet cabin where the vessel has one and ask at booking rather than at the ramp.

Caves and boat trips

Melissani and Drogarati near Sami are on almost every visitor's list and neither publishes a visitor code or any rule about dogs. Given the format, a small rowing boat shared with strangers and a wet stone stairway, neither looks practical with a dog even if she were allowed, and there's no shade for one left outside. Ring the Sami ticket office before you drive over. The same goes for the Katavothres sinkholes and the Zakynthos sea caves, which are a question for each boat operator.

Vets

On Kefalonia all the named practices are in Argostoli: Vavasi Spyridoula on +30 26710 38800, Psarros Eleftherios on +30 26710 22540, Vet Care Niki on +30 26710 02620 and Galiatsatou Anastasia on +30 26710 23807. Nothing is named in Fiskardo, Sami, Skala or Lixouri, so the north of the island is up to an hour from help. On Zakynthos, Patiris Marinos on +30 26950 41293 is the fullest-service practice found, with My Vet on +30 26950 26551 and Vet Clinic Animal on +30 26950 49488, all in or beside the town. There's no named vet on Ithaca at all.

Best walks

North Kefalonia is the best walking on either island. From Fiskardo, Emplisi is five minutes down the path and Foki bay with its cypress grove about two kilometres on, and the marked trail out to Dafnoudi runs through holm oaks with shade most of the way. In Argostoli the Koutavos lagoon boardwalk is a flat, shaded circuit of about 25 minutes with loggerheads in the harbour year round. On Zakynthos, the Argassi stone bridge and the shoreline path east towards Vassilikos make a flat early walk on sand she's allowed on, the Bochali and Strani hill lanes above Zakynthos town are pine and olive with a view over the harbour, the Lomvardou waterfront runs flat from the ferry quay to Krioneri, and the Keri lake wetland tracks behind Agios Sostis are empty first thing. For a real swim, the west coast rock at Porto Limnionas is worth the drive.

When to go

Late May, June, September and the first half of October. Both islands run roughly May to October and nearly every hotel here is seasonal, but July and August are the months people book and the months a dog can't really use them. Midday ground temperatures on unshaded limestone and resort paving are high enough to burn pads, the night-flight curfew at Zakynthos forces a daylight arrival, and the beaches she's allowed on tend to be small rocky coves with no concession and therefore no shade at all. Walk before 08:00 and after 19:00, carry water, and pick a room she can actually stay cool in. An August beach day with a dog on either island is a bad idea on welfare grounds alone.
